Warsaw Police Department Captain Paul Schmitt advised that a federal crime victim assistance grant has been cut 5 percent.
The $35,266 award (in addition to $8,817 local funding) is applied toward th continuation of the Victim's Assistance Office and is used to pay the salary and benefits for director Becky Mareno.
Schmitt said another federal grant applied for the program is expected to be cut 15 percent.
The news came before the Warsaw Board of Works Friday.
Board members Mayor Ernie Wiggins and Jerry Patterson also heard a probationary extension has been set for Patrolman Alan Danko for an additional 90 days, from Sept. 4 through Dec. 4.
A city property auction will be held Aug. 11 for unclaimed property and bicycles. Two city vehicles, a 1991 GMC pick up and a 1993 Chevrolet Caprice will also be offered according to WPD Chief Steve Foster.
Street department superintendent Lacy Francis advised the board of a class action lawsuit regarding fuel tanks on certain GM trucks. Francis said the city has seven vehicles fitting the lawsuits description and GM is offering a cash settlement of $75 each, or $525, or a $1,000 certificate for each vehicle toward purchase of a new truck in the next 50 months.
Council members opted to accept the certificates assuming they can be combined for a $7,000 discount.
"Surely," Wiggins said. "someone will need a new truck in the next five years."
In other business the board:
• Heard form Housing Opportunities of Warsaw director Laura Kaufman regarding mortgage release at 1915 E. Fort Wayne St. Work at that house is under $15,000 and therefore forgivable.
• Heard from City Planner Jeff Noffsinger regarding a release of five liens totaling $4,000 for 509 N. Columbia St. Noffsinger said property owners J.C. and Glenda Wood have been moving toward compliance with code violations and wish to secure a small loan to finish the work.
The outstanding liens were preventing them from getting the money.
The board agreed to forgive what's owed providing the Woods continue to work on the property.
• Approved three entertainment contracts as requested by park department activity directory Andy McCleary for the Family Carnival in Central Park Aug. 10 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
The contracts are for appearance by: Bill Frauhier, Drawn and Quartered Caricature Art, Fort Wayne in the amount of $225; William Lee Davis, Warsaw, The Amazing Bartholomew, Warsaw, for $300; and balloon sculpture artist Nikko Crum, Pierceton, for $62.50. Nikko Crum.
• Approved the 12-month extension of a contract with Komputrol, Cicero, for computer maintenance in the amount of $1,500.
• Heard a special board of works meeting is set for 11:30 a.m. Monday to award contracts on the NIPSCO building and a city council budget workshop meeting for Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Board of works members include Wiggins, Patterson and Charlie Smith. Smith was absent Friday. The board meets the first and third Friday of each month at 10:30 a.m. in council chambers at city hall. [[In-content Ad]]
