Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety approved retirements of two Warsaw Police Department personnel Friday. The board approved the retirements of WPD Patrolman Perry Hunter and WPD Sgt. Scott Quillen. Quillen has served as patrol officer, corporal and was promoted to sergeant rank in charge of third shift in 2010. Quillen’s last day is May 31 after serving 30 years. Hunter’s last day at the department is May 1 after serving 30 years with the department. Hunter has served as patrol officer, corporal, detective sergeant, captain and chief of the department throughout his career. The city is accepting applications for the replacement of these two individuals. Information is at www.warsaw.in.gov In other business, the board approved a bi-weekly salary for Gregory Oberlin at $1,990.58. Oberlin was moved from WPD detective to sergeant due to Quillen’s retirement. The board awarded a salt bid to North American Salt at $70.63 per ton for the city. The board approved a request with WPD and Wihebrink Landscape Management for the business to remove shrubs and debris and plant new plants and mulch on the east side of WPD. The board approved the cemetery purchasing a leaf vacuum for $19,150. The funds have been appropriated in the cemetery equipment budget. The board approved a Warsaw Parks Department contract for Funk Park Rangers to serve as the parks department’s Classic Rock concert opener June 15 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Central Park. The board approved a $9,000 change order for the new city hall project for reconstructing the open deck on the second floor that will overlook the parking lot and reusing an existing door. The board approved a street closure request May 19 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. for placement of fire truck and waterball equipment. The closure is the road behind the Eagles Lodge. The road closure is for an event sponsored by Warsaw Fire Department and American Bikers Aimed Toward Education. The event is at the Eagles Lodge and is a fundraiser for Hoosier Burn Camp victims. The board also approved a cell phone allowance for limited city business for 12 city employees. The allowance will save the city $13,000 a year, Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer said. The cell phone policy will allow the limited use of personal phones by way of an allowance instead of the city providing a cell phone to certain employees. The policy was previously approved by Warsaw City Council.
