Blessed

Ever Since April 2002, I have been a resident at Retired Tigers. I was born and raised in this county on a farm at the Kosciusko-Whitley county line by two of the finest, most loving and caring parents this eldest of four siblings could ever hope to be blessed with.

My parents attended a small country church in Collamer near South Whitley where I have attended when my health and finances allowed it for nearly 66 years. My roots in this county and that little church run pretty deep.

It is where I chose to bring my only child, a daughter, up and to teach her how to love herself and to always believe she was a worthwhile person capable of achieving whatever she wanted to do with her life.

I am a firm believer in focusing on the positive things in life as there are many, many blessings these days for me to count. Just to still be alive is the one most important to the two of us, as I have had some pretty terrible struggles with my health since the year 2000.

As a resident here, I really like the little warm and cozy home I have. Our staff, Judy Handziak and Penny Kittrell, our porter, plus a neighbor, Billy, I think deserve some praise for all they do to keep this place as neat and as well-maintained as they always have. Judy, our manager, plans to retire in May 2012. I think she has done a terrific job, and I will miss her and hope things go well for her.

When we have not had a maintenance man like sometimes has happened, Judy and Penny, on top of their regular duties, have also had to do maintenance work in a building that is about 35 years old and a maintenance nightmare. Billy has been very good to come to their aid.

Sometime back, he purchased the house that is beside the alley behind Retired Tigers, which I think was owned by David Kolbe, who has a law office on this block. At that time, the home had a long row of shrubs that started by the front of the house and ran down to Washington Street.

If you had an SUV or van, you could see well enough to tell whether anyone was coming south. However, if your vehicle sat lower, there was a good chance you would be pulled out into the street before you could see anyone coming. Now that I have a vehicle, I do not know how many times myself and others here have nearly gotten broadsided because those shrubs were not kept trimmed back.

Since Billy bought this home, right away he tore those shrubs out and put in a split-rail fence so I want to thank him for being such a good neighbor. He has his own business but has come in here often to help with maintenance problems.
I am so thankful to have the home that I do here. It is one of the many blessings these days I thank God for.
