Bison Contained After Roaming Ind. 13

PIERCETON – About 20 bison have kept local officials busy last night and today after escaping a pen Wednesday.
Kosciusko County Central Dispatch received a call at 10:25 p.m. Wednesday that three bison had crossed an individual’s property on Ind. 13 between CRs 150N and 200N, according to Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Dept. Public Information Officer Sgt. Chad Hill.
Officers arrived and determined there were 19 or 20 bison on the loose, including five calves. A couple of the bison were by the roadway. Officers secured northbound and southbound traffic on Ind. 13.
Hill said the potential owner of the bison, Robin Liechty, Fort Wayne, was contacted. The owner was leasing the land where the bison may have escaped from. The owner arrived at the scene at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday and was able to contain the bison in a field east of the roadway.
This morning, Hill said dispatch had a pop-up call for assistance from the animal control officer. Deputies were asked to assist by shutting down the road in case the herd moved in that direction. Because of a bridge closure on Ind. 13, Hill said the road has already been closed, but there is some local traffic.
As of about 10:30 a.m. today, Hill said no vehicles were struck by the animals. The bison were all corralled this morning.
Hill reported the owner said the bison can be extremely mean and aggressive, especially with calves in the herd.
“Even without that, they are aggressive,” he said.
The bison were moved into trucks and trailers and moved to a secure location, Hill said.[[In-content Ad]]
