BOURBON - A battle of Marshall County rivals, Plymouth kept pulling the trigger and finally left Triton struggling to get back up.

A game in which the Pilgrims fired up 23 three-pointers, perhaps none were as important as the two that juniors Kyle Plumlee and Kyle Benge drilled in the fourth quarter as Plymouth pulled away for a 76-65 win Tuesday evening.

With Plymouth clinging to a 58-54 lead, Plumlee stepped up and drilled a three-pointer with 5:46 remaining, and then Benge came back with one of his own less than a minute later to put the visiting Pilgrims up 64-54.

Up to that point, Plymouth's biggest lead of the game was six, but the back-to-back three-pointers seemed to break Triton's back as the Pilgrims turned an otherwise back and forth game into a 14-point lead with under 43 seconds left.

"I thought a key time was when we got the seven- to eight-point gap," said longtime Plymouth coach Jack Edison, who upped his career win total to 463 with the 11-point victory. "We were able to exted our offense a little and extend their defense. If we miss those (three-pointers) it changes the whole complexion of the game."

Instead, it went a long way in lifting the Pilgrims to their 42nd win over Triton in 44 career meetings.

Triton beat Plymouth in 1965 as the Trojans advanced to the elite eight, but didn't beat the Pilgrims again until Mike McBride hit the game-winner with four seconds left in 1989.

Now the coach of the Trojans, McBride has had Triton right where it needed to be only to have it slip away.

Last year the Trojans led by 12 but fell apart when Josh Moore went down with an injury. Plymouth went on to win 59-51.

Tuesday evening Triton raced out to a 7-0 lead to start the game, but nine three-pointers by Plymouth and some missed opportunities by the Trojans told the story.

"We had a 1-on-1 and we missed a bunny," said McBride, now in his third year with Triton. "Not only did we miss a bunny, but they got a layup. The third quarter was big. We came out and stopped them, but we couldn't convert."

Plymouth trailed 38-35 at halftime, but a three-pointer from Geoff Scheetz knotted the game at 40 with 5:33 left in the third.

The teams were tied at 47 before Scheetz hit another trey and Ryan Pickell and Benge each hit a free throw.

The Pilgrims led by six, 54-48, until senior Isaac Sellers beat the third-quarter buzzer for Triton.

The fourth quarter started with Benge, the top scoring sophomore in the state a year ago, picking up his fourth foul. Moore, now a senior for Triton, converted both free throws and the Trojans trailed just 54-52 and looked to be in good shape to change their fortune against Plymouth but the back-to-back three-pointers that came two minutes later gave Plymouth the boost it needed.

"They deserve a lot of credit," McBride said of Plymouth. "They were able to get production from other kids (when Benge was in foul trouble). They're a good team this year."

The win improved Plymouth to 2-0, while Class 1A No. 10 Triton fell to 0-1.

Benge led all scorers with 23, while Plumlee added 14, Scheetz 11, Ryan Pickell nine, Matt Haug seven, Kyle Wallace and Matt Houin five each, and Scott Michel two.

Triton got 21 points and 11 rebounds from Moore, while Todd Blackford scored 13, Cory McClarnon and Braxton Barton 11 each, Sellers seven and Chad Kauffman two.

The Trojans, who were playing without senior Kyle Bell because of a knee injury suffered in football, are in action again Friday when they host NorthWood.
