Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States.
A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections. It obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.
Luke Becknell, Warsaw, who grew up in Bourbon, came up with the bike ride idea three years ago to honor his brother, Ben, who died from cystic fibrosis.
Becknell said although his brother did not bicycle, he played basketball and ran cross country.
“The reason we chose cycling is because it is popular now and we are trying to promote cycling as a healthy lifestyle in our area,” Becknell said.
Becknell said when a family is dealing with cystic fibrosis the disease always wins.
“My brother lived until he was 30, which was unusual at that time, but it is now more common for people with cystic fibrosis to live until 35 and there are a lot of medical expenses that come with the disease,” Becknell said.
Becknell’s family has done various fundraising events over the years for cystic fibrosis.
There is a $15 entry fee and an $18 fee after Aug. 31.
There is a family entry fee of $40, and after Aug. 31 the fee is $45.
