SYRACUSE - Betty Jane Gerard, 86, of Syracuse, died of a sudden illness at 1:50 a.m. Jan. 6, 2008, in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

She was born June 20, 1921, in Phillips, Wis., to Albert and Anna Schleicker Tenut. In 1941, she married William Gerard, who died Aug. 6, 1989.

She moved to Plymouth from Chicago in 1952, and to Syracuse in 1995. She was a homemaker, a charter member of Shepherd by the Lakes Lutheran Church, Syracuse, and a former member of Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church, Plymouth. She was active in the Syracuse Senior Center.

Surviving are two sons, Gerald "Jerry" (and spouse Gloria) Gerard, Goshen, and Gary (and spouse Mary) Gerard, Syracuse; a sister, Lena Jackson, Evanston, Ill.; two grandchildren, Evan and Braedon Gerard, both of Syracuse; four step-grandchildren, Scott and Shane Green, Deb Wheeler and Cindy Matuska; and 13 step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Shepherd by the Lakes Lutheran Church, 7449 E. CR 1000N, Syracuse, with Pastor Jerry Winegarden officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth.

Calling is from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home, Harris Chapel, Syracuse, and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.
