PIERCETON - Betty E. Witmer, 83, of Big Barbee Lake, died at 12:07 a.m. Aug. 22, 2007, in Wesley Healthcare Center, Auburn.

She was born Dec. 13, 1923, in Kosciusko County, to Lee and Cleo Streiby Henwood. On July 20, 1946, she married Thomas Edison Witmer, who died Sept. 26, 2006.

She graduated from Syracuse High School and earned a degree in home economics education at Purdue University in 1945. After living in Whitley County until retiring from farming, they moved to Big Barbee Lake. She taught at North Webster School for two years, Cromwell School for five years and Columbia City Joint High School for many years, retiring in the mid 1970s. She was a member of West Etna Community Church and West Etna Ladies Aid, Whitley County Home Extension Club and Indiana State Retired Teachers Association.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Tom (Cheryl) Settercerri, Monument, Colo.; a son, Thomas K. Witmer, Syracuse; five grandchildren; a step-granddaughter; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at West Etna Community Church, Larwill, with Pastors Larry Goss and Bud Winstead officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Calling is from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, and one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.
