She was born Sept. 6, 1918, to Amos and Kathryn Hollar.
She was a 1936 Milford High School graduate and earned degrees from Ball State and Indiana universities.
While living in Washington, D.C., in the mid '40s, she taught in the Foreign Service Institute of the State Department. Her students were young adults who were assigned to the embassies and consulates of the United States in foreign countries. Before departing for their posts, they were required to take refresher courses in shorthand, typing and Dept. of State correspondence. She also worked for the CIA in an instructional capacity. Other teaching positions were with Ball State and Indiana universities. She retired in 1985, after teaching 30 years at Goshen High School, where she taught shorthand, typing and business courses. The last 15 years she counseled seniors with college plans and applications for financial aid. She also enjoyed editing the school yearbook "The Crimson."
A contributing member of the Eye Bank for Sight Restoration of New York City, she urged donations to the Eye Bank of the I.U. Medical Center through her speaking and writing. She was a three-gallon contributor in the Red Cross Volunteer Blood Donor program.
She held a life membership in Delta Pi Epsilon, National Honorary Professional Graduate Society in business education and was the first woman granted permission to study in Harvard University's Widener Library while completing requirements for a graduate degree. She served as the secretary of the Milford High School Alumni Association for many years and also held memberships in the Audubon Society and Women's Christian Temperance Union. A life-long member of the Bethel Church, she served as organist for more than 50 years.
Surviving are two children: Dianne (and spouse George) Loya, Meridian, Idaho; Kevin (and spouse Pam) Dwyer, Milford; three grandchildren; and a sister, Edna (and spouse Thomas) Barbour.
Her body was donated to the I.U. Anatomical Education Program. It was her request that there be no viewing or funeral. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Truth of Word Ministries, formerly the Bethel Church of the Brethren, 210 E. Catherine St., Milford.
Mishler Funeral Home, 461 W. CR 900N, Milford, is in charge of arrangements.
