He was born May 7, 1935, in Elwood, to Francis A. “Abb” and Marybelle Fish Stage. On July 27, 1962, in Elwood, he married Mary Downham, who survives.
He graduated from Elwood High School in 1954, where he achieved All State Tackle on the Elwood Panthers football team. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps., serving during the Korean War. He was a member of G Company 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines 2nd Marine Division, where he was a .30 caliber machine gunner.
He moved to Warsaw in 1968 where he remained for 45 years. He was a retired carpenter/siding applicator for more than 45 years. He was a member of Warsaw Church of Christ, American Legion Post 49, Warsaw, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1126, Warsaw, for many years. His greatest love was his family, the outdoors and his garden.
Also surviving are a daughter, Torie Wilkins, Goshen; a son, Benny R. (and spouse Theresa) Stage, Claypool; six grandchildren: Benny Stage III and Jerry D. and Nickolas E. Wilkins, all of Warsaw; Donald C. and Miranda N. Stage, both of Claypool; and Sandra Lyn Hall, Goshen; five great-grandchildren: Noah L., Tanner E., Emma and Bryson “Kip” Wilkins and Abigail R. Hall; and a sister, Joyce A. Chambers. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Patty Diane Stage; a brother, Donald E. Stage; and two sisters, Mary Francis Snyder and Verna J. Jackson.
A graveside will be at noon Thursday at Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, with military honors provided by members of the U.S. Marine Corps.
No calling is planned.
