He was born June 25, 1942, in South Whitley, to Edward W. Sr. and Julia Eloise Sweeney Ulshafer. On Oct. 31, 1964, in Columbia City, he married Cindy H. Reid, who survives.
He graduated from South Whitley High School in 1960. From 1960-64, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a mechanic at Jerry Watson Ford, Fort Wayne, for seven years; was a parts manager at Brookside Lincoln Mercury, Fort Wayne, for seven years; was past owner of Ummel Trailer Sales, Columbia City, for 14 years; and was a regional sales manager for Newmar Corp., Nappanee, for 14 years, retiring in 2001. A resident of Whitley County the majority of his life, he moved to Tippecanoe Lake in 1990. He was a past member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Columbia City, North Webster Church of God, Hoosier Hot Rods and a past member of American Legion Post 777, Indianapolis, and North Webster American Legion.
Also surviving are three daughters, Candy C. (and spouse Gregory) Otter, Bloomington; Carrie C. (and spouse Jeff) Lemon, Larwill; and Carmen L. (and spouse Todd) Coyle, Columbia City, IN; a son, Steven L. Ulshafer, Milwaukee, Wis.; brothers, Edward W. Jr. (and spouse Marilyn) Ulshafer, Fort Wayne; Jack D. and Terry N. Ulshafer, both of South Whitley; and Tom H. Ulshafer, Columbia City; a sister, Loretta J. (and spouse Ted) Easterday, South Whitley; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at DeMoney-Grimes Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, with Pastor Larry Schmoekel officiating, assisted by Pastor Dennis Judy. Burial will be in Mock Cemetery, North Webster, with military graveside honors by members of the U.S. Army.
