A benefit to raise funds for Indiana families of active duty servicemen is being planned, including an appearance by country artist Collin Raye.

The benefit, “Red, White and You Barbecue,” is to raise funds for Wish For Our Heroes. It is being organized by Mary Louise Miller, ML Motorsports owner, Warsaw.

The event is Oct. 7 from 3 to 10 p.m. at Spike’s Beach Bar and Grill, 310 Eastlake Drive, Warsaw.

Scott Woods, Spikes Beach Grill and Noa Noa Wood Grill and Sushi Bar owner, will prepare the barbecue. Woods also is the executive chef at the restaurant.

Wish For Our Heroes is a Noblesville-based non-profit organization that  assists active-duty military families struggling with burdens caused by deployment, family separation and daily strains of military life.

To date, the organization has granted 1,088 wishes across 46 states and four countries. ML Motorsports, Warsaw, has hosted numerous military personnel at various NASCAR Nationwide Series races since April.

When basic needs are met, the organization also enjoys providing things like sending the troops to athletic events, vacations for families to get reacquainted after deployments and meeting celebrities.

During the benefit at Spike’s, there will be a welcome at 3 p.m. by Jeff Wells, Wish For Our Heroes president, and a silent auction.

Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer will make an appearance followed by a barbecue buffet at 4 p.m.

Raye will perform at 5 p.m. A live auction will take place at 6 p.m., and the Sock Monkeys will perform at 7 and 8:45 p.m. Live and silent auction winners will be announced at 8 p.m.

Those wanting to attend must RSVP by Sept. 28 to Billy Hutchinson, ML Motorsports marketing director and Wish For Our Heroes board member, at [email protected] or 574-858-2596.

Those who attend are encouraged to make a financial contribution to benefit the Wish For Our Heroes organization.

Divide And Conquer
Editor, Times-Union: It is glaringly obvious to anyone with functioning brain cells that today’s MAGA (formerly known as the Grand Old Party) has only one strategy to win the 2024 election: divide and conquer and pull the wool over the voting public’s eyes. Their playbook consists of misinformation, distortion of facts, projections, conspiracy theories and plain old bald-faced lies. If they cannot find damning evidence of lawlessness or evil deeds in their opponents’ resumes, they just make something up: Kamala’s intelligence or race, Tim’s real pet dog or his mysterious connection to China; Biden’s unwillingness to help America’s catastrophe victims.

High Stakes
Editor, Times-Union: Our future is on the ballot from the presidential race at the top of the governor’s race and all the key races down ballot. Control of Congress, our ability to vote, our democratic processes, long-held freedoms, are all on the ballot. “A lot of the things that get decided at the federal level really are so distanced from the everyday of peoples’ lives ... But the state-level elections are the ones that really have a huge, huge impact ...” (AARP Bulletin, July-August 2024)
