Local musicians and vocalists showcased their talents during the 2013 Idol Variety Nite to raise funds for the Kosciusko County Cancer Care Fund Saturday.
The event titled “Sing For Support” was at Wagon Wheel Theatre in Warsaw. Attendees could vote for their favorite Idol online or by using Paypal.
There also were glass jars at tables during the event into which attendees could place money for the Idol they felt gave the best performance.
All proceeds went to the Kosciusko County Cancer Care Fund administered by K21 Health Foundation. The fund reduces the challenges facing cancer patients and their families by financially assisting them during their fight.
There were four judges: Greg Horton, Kelly Britton, Patrick Kavanaugh and Mary Crane. There were eight contestants: Karrie “Lynn” Burkhart, Briana Sue Marshall, Sara Bowling, Kylene Crabb, Mike Beezley, Jade Pulsipher, Heather Clemons and Sasha Beliles.
The production was directed by Scott Michaels and Matt Niemier served as host.
Beezley, Leesburg, won the “People’s Choice” vote. He received the most votes when the audience placed the most funds in his jar during the event for his performance when he played the ukulele and sang “Over The Rainbow.” He was the only male contestant of the night.
Beezley received $1,000 and a plaque. He is the pastor of Clunette United Methodist Church.
He said it is a huge blessing to receive the award.
“I’m blown away and thankful to God and all of the people who have come out and heard stories of those who have suffered from cancer,” Beezley said.
Beezley said he lost his grandmother and other loved ones to cancer.
Kylene Crabb, Mentone, won the Judge’s Choice Award for singing “Anyway.”
Crabb graduated from Purdue University and moved to Nashville, Tenn., to pursue a country music singing career. In Nashville, she worked with songwriters Roger Murrah, Paul Compton and Phillip White.
Crabb said she has friends and parents’ friends whose lives have been touched by cancer.
“Coming tonight to be a part of this has been a great feeling and the emotions in the room were real and natural,” Crabb said.
Romy Reich, 2012 Idol Nite Judge’s Choice winner, sang two songs, Journey’s “Your’re Tearing Me Apart” and “Don’t Stop Believing.”
Dr. Musaberk Goksel, Kosciusko Community Hospital Cancer Care Center medical director, provided words of inspiration. Attendees sang “Happy Birthday” to Goksel.
“Even though there are hardships and dealing with something as difficult as cancer, sometimes it’s easy to remember how fortunate we are to have access to medications for cancer patients,” Goksel said.
Bill Crane named sponsors including: Crouse Body Shop, Edward Jones, Kerlin’s Western World, Lake City Bank, J3 Salon, KCH, Lake City Radio, Maple Leaf Farms, North Pointe Cinemas, Penguin Point, and Signature Portrait Studio.
