On July 1, Beaman Home will celebrate 28 years of providing a safe haven to victims of domestic violence and their children. I don't think 28 years ago the founding mothers of Beaman Home ever anticipated the growth in the number of domestic violence victims who would need their help. The current 1,800-square-foot single-family home with three bedrooms is nearly 100 years old. Last year the Beaman Home provided shelter to nearly 150 victims.
I have been assisting Beaman Home in their campaign to build a new emergency shelter because domestic violence can happen in any family. I should know … it happened in my family. While it is something we don't talk about publicly, I asked my mother if I could share her story. Her response was, “You must.” I don’t want other women and their children live the life we did. There is a silver lining in my mother’s life. She broke the cycle of violence and is living a very happy life, surrounded by a loving family.
Many of us may know a family member, neighbor, friend or co-worker who has experienced domestic violence. They may not openly discuss it, but in our hearts, we know.
I invite the women of our community to help those mothers who may never know you by name but will have a safe place to go with their children because of you. Join me in thanking the Beaman Home’s 28 years of dedicated services with your donation of $28, $280 or $2,800 to the Beaman Home Campaign. If your gift arrives before July 31, it will be matched, dollar for dollar, by the Kosciusko County Community Foundation and will help Beaman Home reach their goal of raising the $1.8 million needed to build their new facility. The proposed 10 residence rooms will be equipped with 40 beds and will include a an outreach center with a teaching kitchen, children’s activity area and meeting space.
One of the things I appreciate most about my community is the loving, caring spirit of our citizens. Taking care of one another is what makes Hoosiers so special.
