This will be Bartley’s second term as chair. About 20 party members gathered in its Warsaw headquarters to choose officers.
The only nominee for the position, Bartley thanked members for their votes and said he looks forward to the next four years.
“We’ve come a long way and we have a long way to go,” he said. “I hope things go as well as they have for the past four years.”
Lee Ann Brown was voted vice chair. This is her first full term after being appointed to the position in 2009.
“It’s been a whirlwind for the past few years, and it’s sure to be a whirlwind for the next few years,” she said after the vote.
Jeanne Scott was elected as party secretary. Arthur Brown was originally nominated for reelection, but said he would defer if there was a female candidate.
Scott told party members she has been with county democrats for more than four years, attending every meeting and taking notes, so she would be comfortable as secretary.
And John Bonitati, who was absent but submitting his name for consideration via email, was voted party treasurer. Arthur Brown nominated the former appointee to his first elected term to the position.
Arthur Brown was later chosen as communications and media director, a newly created position.
After elections, Bartley discussed plans for 2013. He said acquisition a year ago of their headquarters at 417 E. Winona Ave. has increased their exposure and they intend to keep it open.
He got state approval to run bingo games at the headquarters, which he said should help pay the rent, and said he would like to get another big name to speak at the Jefferson Jackson Dinner this year. He said they may try to get Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.
Bartley said after the meeting he expects to secure a speaker in the next 30 days.
“Ed Schultz was a great draw, he made this office happen. We can get a draw with a big name, and you’ll see there are more democrats in Kosciusko County than people think,” he said. “We suffer sometimes by having few candidates on the ballot, but we’re working very hard to change that. We want to give people a choice.”[[In-content Ad]]
