WATERLOO - The Warsaw Tigers hit the road Friday night for the first time this season to take on unbeaten DeKalb.

The hour-plus bus drive to Waterloo showed as the Tigers came out cold in the first quarter and fell 65-41 to the Barons.

While Warsaw struggled from the field, DeKalb was red hot from just about everywhere on the floor.

Dakota Smith served as the proverbial thorn in Warsaw's side as he came out of the blocks quick and scored 15 first half points.

"DeKalb was really good tonight," said fifth-year Warsaw coach Doug Ogle. "I thought Dakota Smith played as well as you can play. He was perfect from the field and had some well-timed shots for them at key points of the game."

Smith was perfect from behind the three-point arc in the first 16 minutes going 4 of 4.

For the game Smith was 7 of 7 from the field and 4 of 4 from the free-throw line for a game-high 22 points.

As a team, DeKalb was 24 of 35 (68.5 percent) from the field for the game. Warsaw was just 15 of 41 (36 percent).

DeKalb's biggest lead in the first half came at the 4:30 mark of the second quarter when the Barons were up 33-14.

The Barons' full-court press forced Warsaw into 10 turnovers. While the Tigers were just as pressing on defense and forced DeKalb into 12 points, DeKalb scored 14 points off of turnovers in the first half to Warsaw's six.

DeKalb rode an 11-point run to close out the first quarter to build its lead. Smith led the way for DeKalb in the first quarter as he scored 12 turnovers in the first eight minutes.

Warsaw came out aggressive in the third quarter as Steve Lemasters converted on a three-point play to start the half then after a DeKalb miss found a wide-open Justin Clemens to cut the Barons' lead to 12 at 41-29.

Clemens then cut the lead to 10 on a strong layup after DeKalb's Mitch Beerbower missed a wide open layup after a steal.

Tommy Reinholt was forced to sit at the 4:35 mark of the third quarter after picking up his third foul on a pushing call. Reinholt then came back into the game at the 3:19 mark of the third quarter.

Warsaw had a couple opportunities to narrow the DeKalb lead to double digits but were unable to convert on a couple of contested, short-range shots.

"After a miserable first half we started the third quarter well and scored seven straight points," said Ogle. "We just missed some good shots that could have made it a game. It was just one of those nights."

DeKalb scored its first point of the third quarter at the 3:11 mark when Tim Wallace connected on the front end of a two-shot foul.

After a pair of Smith free throws, he shot a no-look pass to Wallace at the 1:44 mark of the third to extend DeKalb's lead to 16 at 47-31

After two buckets by Warsaw reserves Scott Harman and Ryne Robinson, Smith scored the last four points of the quarter on a fadeaway jumper and a driving layup as time expired in the quarter to give his Barons a 51-35 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

Ogle pointed out Harman's performance as a highlight of his team's night.

DeKalb opened up the final quarter with 10 straight points before Eric Blanton nailed a jumper from the corner at the 4:41 mark to give Warsaw its first two points of the quarter and to make DeKalb's lead 61-37.

Lemasters led the Tigers with nine points. Harman came off the bench for Warsaw and scored six.

Reinholt battled all night but was held to five points and five rebounds against a swarming DeKalb defense.

"We can't dwell on this too long. We have Huntington North next. It'll be our third game this week and their first so we're going to have to dig down deep to compete and try and play better," said Ogle.

Warsaw, 2-2 on the season, plays at Huntington North tonight.
