She was born April 8, 1927, in Alexandria, to Herman E. and Martha Stewart Swift. She married Clarence R. Crouch, who died in 1996.
A lifetime Alexandria resident, she graduated from Alexandria High School in 1945. Upon graduation, she took a position with Indiana and Michigan Electric for seven years. She then began working for Heritage Federal Savings and Loan as a teller for 10 years. She was then promoted to branch manager, a position she held for 17 years. By acquisition, she actually retired from Railroadmen’s Savings and Loan in 1990. She was a member of Alexandria First Baptist Church for more than 50 years. For 15 years she taught the 2- and 3-year-old class and more recently she was a co-teacher for the Loyalty Sunday School class. She was an honorary member of the Alexandria Lions Club and Kappa Delta Phi Sorority.
Surviving are a daughter, Brenda (and spouse Terry) Vanlaningham, Mentone; three grandchildren: Dr. Cameron (and spouse Kelly) Vanlaningham, Kalamazoo, Mich.; Hilary (and spouse Jaydee) Parker, Silver Lake; and Cory Vanlaningham, Orlando, Fla.; two great-grandsons, Noah Vanlaningham and Carson Parker; two great-granddaughters, Carly Vanlaningham and Alayna Parker; a son-in-law, Dick Donovan, Kendallville; two stepsons, Larry (and spouse Doreen) Crouch, Yorktown, and Merrill (and spouse Marilyn) Crouch, Oolitic; seven step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Freda (and spouse Carroll) Valentine; several nieces, nephews and cousins; a caregiver, Debbie Garner, Alexandria; and her constant companion, her 5-pound poodle, Zoe Claire. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Peggy Donovan, who died in 2008; and two sisters, Alma Catha and Thelma Schorree.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Owens Funeral Home, 412 N. Harrison St., Alexandria, officiated by Pastor Michael Deutsch. Burial will be in Park View Cemetery, Alexandria.
Calling is from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
