Ballot Error Shuts Off Voting Machine

The race for Warsaw School Board seats hit another snafu today.

A voting machine for Warsaw Ward 2, Precinct 2, did not include school board District 4 candidates Sterling Watkins and Charles E. "Chuck" Sauders, Kosciusko County Clerk Sharon Christner said at 11 a.m. today.

She said the candidates were missing from ballots on just one machine. The machine was shut down as soon as the error was found, but Christner said she did not know how many people had voted on that machine before the precinct stopped using it.

"It was fairly early when it was caught," she said.

Asked if the voters who used the machine would be allowed to revote, Christner said once a voter has been in a polling place, they can't go back in. Whether or not the school board race is run again because of the problem, Christner said, she couldn't say.

A recount could be called by the candidates.

This is the second problem to hit the Warsaw School Board election in a week.

Last week a glitch was discovered in the ballot printing for absentee voters in Wayne Township Precinct 5, which is in Warsaw school board District 3. That ballot had erroneously put the candidates for District 4 - Sauders and Watkins - on the ballots for District 3. District 3 candidates are Jim Folk and Dan Robinson.

At that point, Christner said that by election day, the ballots would be corrected. Fifty-two absentee ballots were sent out for Wayne 5, but not all had been returned by Wednesday. Wayne 5 was the only precinct affected.

Christner said her office was planning to call the people who voted by absentee ballot in Wayne 5 and ask them if they wanted to revote for school board.

If they chose not to vote again for the correct school board candidates, the votes they already cast for the school board would not count because they were voting for candidates in the wrong district. [[In-content Ad]]
