Balanced Vikings Beat Wabash
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
AKRON -ÊThe Tippecanoe Valley Vikings used balanced scoring to overcome an early defecit Tuesday night in a 83-67 win over Wabash.
With the Apaches' move to the Three Rivers Conference, the game was the conference opener for both squads despite it being just the second game of the season.
Wabash jumped out to an early 8-0 lead to start the game.
"We struggled at times tonight," said Valley head coach Bill Patrick. "We weren't sharp in that first quarter defensively. We've got to do a better job of coming out on the floor ready to play."
The win was the 625th of Patrick's career.
Senior Adam Nelson finally put Valley on the board with a three-pointer at the 5:51 mark of the first quarter.
Nelson went 2 of 5 from beyond the three-point arc for the evening.
The Vikings slowly clawed their way back and eventualy took their first lead of the game when senior Kevin Kindig's layup gave Valley a 20-18 lead.
Wabash's Jacob Eakright ended the first quarter with a jumper to tie the score 20-20.
The Apaches couldn't keep up with the Vikings on a night when unseasonably warm conditions outside turned Valley's gym into a virtual sauna.
Valley began to pull away from Wabash as the Vikings scored the first six points of the quarter and outscored the Apaches for the quarter 19-9.
"I thought our kids did a good job of dealing with the heat," said Patrick. "A lot better than some of the coaches did."
While Patrick was referring to his own staff, Wabash coach Matt Stone become increasingly hot under the collar with calls he perceived to be wrong.
Things finally boiled over in the fourth quarter when he was whistled for a technical foul after showing displeasure at a foul call.
Free throws became the main form of scoring in the second half. For the game, the two teams combined to shoot 52 free throws with many of them coming in the final two quarters.
Valley's 6-foot-5 junior Shane Salyer spent a good part of his night at the charity stripe as he converted 9 of 13. Salyer scored a game-high 19 points while pulling down five rebounds.
Salyer was also a force on the defensive end.
"I'd have to say that Shane (Salyer) was our defensive MVP tonight," said Patrick. "And that's not really his game. He's more of a fan of the offensive side of the ball."
Salyer was able to disrupt Wabash's inside play and forced the Apaches to shoot over Valley's defense.
For a while the Apaches were able to stay within 12 points of Valley but couldn't keep up their shooting performance.
Wabash senior Ryan Denney came off the bench and hit four three-pointers to finish with 12 points.
For the game the Apaches were 7 of 11 from three-point land.
Valley went 6 of 14 on three-pointers with Chad Hoffer hitting 3 of 6. Hoffer hit a three at the end of the third quarter to push his team's lead to 61-46.
Hoffer finished with 17 points while Kindig finished with 15.
Nelson went 5 of 9 from the field and 5 of 5 from the free-throw line to finish with 18 points.
Ryan Scherzer came off the Valley bench to score seven points.
Valley, 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the TRC, hosts Knox (2-0) Friday.
