Balanced Scoring, Points In The Paint Push Tigers Past Panthers

Just as he did last week, Warsaw's Michael Wienhorst made his presence known in the paint.

Only this time Tiger boys basketball coach Doug Ogle didn't get any heart-stopping heroics from the 6-foot-3 junior - he didn't need them.

Wienhorst, who hit the winning free throw against Elkhart Memorial last Monday and the game-winning shot against Plymouth on Thursday, led a quartet of Tigers in double figures Tuesday evening as Warsaw scored at will in the paint and downed visiting South Bend Washington 77-63.

Wienhorst, whose only visible evidence from a December knee injury is a black brace, scored a game-high 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and was 5 of 7 from the free throw line. He also added eight eight rebounds.

"Michael (Wienhorst) is really coming on," said Ogle, whose Tigers are now 13-6 and on a four-game win streak. "He's doing a good job scoring in the basket area. He's a high-energy player."

Senior Adam Griggs added 15 points in the win, while classmate Todd Braddock and junior Michael Moore added 11 each.

As easily as Moore found Wienhorst under the basket to win a pair of conference games last week, the Tigers routinely found teammates in transition Tuesday, leading to easy baskets inside and a high shooting percentage from the field.

As a team, Warsaw shot 26 of 43 (60.5 percent) from the field, a percentage that was brought down by hitting just 1 of 10 three-point attempts.

Not so hot-handed from the outside, the Tigers were nearly uncontested by the Panthers in the paint.

"We did well in transition tonight," Ogle said. "That was the best we've played in terms of transition baskets. South Bend Washington's perimeter defensive pressure is very good, but if you get the ball inside their defense isn't as good. They don't have a lot size. I thought we could get the ball inside, that was our goal, and we did a good job."

Using their touch from three-point range, hitting four treys in the third quarter, the Panthers cut Warsaw's lead to 47-45 with just over three minutes to play in the third quarter.

The problem, though, for Washington was stopping the Tigers from getting easy baskets inside, and the Panthers couldn't do so.

Wienhorst, Griggs, senior Ryan Schultz and sophomore Shaun Cabrera all scored baskets as Warsaw closed the third with a 10-2 run.

"We just didn't play good defense in the paint," said Washington assistant coach Steve Henry, filling in for Panther head coach Chad Johnson who was serving a one-game suspension for getting two technicals in the first quarter of his team's game with South Bend Adams. "We put good pressure on them up front but we didn't get the job done in the backcourt. They scored a lot of points in the paint. We don't have a 6-9 or 6-10 guy to protect the basket."

Washington got as close as eight, 65-57, in the fourth quarter but five straight points from Cabrera, the latter three coming when he converted on a slick backdoor pass from Greg Allison and was fouled on the play, pushed the Tiger lead back into double digits.

Cabrera, who scored 10 points in the junior varsity contest, got varsity minutes in the third and fourth quarters and finished with seven points and five rebounds.

"Cabrera gave us some good minutes," said Ogle. "He did a nice job tonight."

Schultz scored eight for Warsaw, while Allison added six.

Washington, which hit 10 three-pointers, was led in scoring by Johnathan Jamerson's 17 points, while Chris Henderson added 14 and Brandon Johnson 13.

The Panthers, who fell to 12-7 on the season, hit 10 of 21 three-point attempts but shot a dismal 13 of 37 from two-point range.

The Tigers are in action again Friday, celebrating senior night with a home contest against Huntington North.
