July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
BREMEN - What coach Gayle Perry said was a problem last week, she was certainly right in saying it was a strength Saturday.
The match scored tied at one game apiece in the championship game of Saturday evening's 2A volleyball regional at Bremen High School, Triton's Amber Mellott served the Trojans to a 12-0 lead, sending momentum and a berth in the the state finals Triton's way.
Triton finished off Prairie Heights 21-15, 18-21, 21-15, 21-11, advancing the Trojans to state for the second straight year.
Triton, now 27-9, plays No. 1 Brownstown Central (34-2) at 9 a.m. in Saturday's semifinal at Indianapolis Ben Davis High School. Union County (26-10) plays Muncie Burris (32-6) in the second semifinal, with the winners meeting at 4 p.m. at Hinkle Fieldhouse for the state championship.
"We're very excited about getting to state, that was one of our goals," Perry said. "Not only to get there, but do something down there."
The Trojans lost in the state semifinals a year ago to eventual state champ Muncie Burris.
After downing the Panthers in the third game, giving them a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-five series, the Trojans jumped out to a 9-1 lead in what became the final game, as Trojan junior Samantha Keel served up eight straight points.
"Serving was a problem last week," Perry said. "It was our strength tonight. The pressure was off then, we had a 2-1 lead, and the girls started talking to each other. Pressure does funny things to people. I felt like the team that adapted best to the pressure was going to be the team that was successful."
Pressure or no pressure, Triton was clearly the team with the fire in its eye Saturday.
The Trojans came out and made things look easy against North Miami in the morning semifinal, downing the fourth-ranked Warriors (31-5) 21-13, 21-16, 21-17.
"I scouted them last week," Perry said of North Miami. "Between them and Rochester, I really felt like they'd give us the least problems. We were very well prepared for North Miami."
Senior Ashli Senff finished the championship game with 14 kills for Triton, while classmate Gina Westafer added eight kills and 13 digs. Junior Terrin Meister had seven kills and 12 digs for the champions, while Keel had 20 assists.
