The picture and accompanying article on the front page of the June 30 edition of the Times-Union concerning the overpopulation crisis at the Animal Welfare League has haunted my dreams by night and kept me in tears during the day.
As I write this letter, one of my girls is resting peacefully in my lap. I can’t imagine what those poor animals go through daily, sometimes two to a cage, nor can I imagine what the staff and volunteers go through daily as they look into all those eyes.
I write this letter as a plea for more money from the Warsaw County Council and the Warsaw City Council, and maybe some executives of some of Warsaw's larger manufacturing facilities and retail outlets. With the AWL unable to accept any more animals, there will be sick, heartless people that will start dumping animals. I ask you, what would you do if some morning you woke up to a stray animal on your doorstep, or perhaps an entire litter of puppies or kittens? What would you do? Would you give them a home? Would you load them up in the family vehicle and dump them somewhere else? Would you kill them? These are questions only you can answer.
I would also like to urge adoption. Perhaps you’re a senior citizen like me that would like a companion. I cannot imagine my life without my three girls.
If you cannot adopt, perhaps you could forego one fast food meal per week. If 20 people did this, it would help. Anything helps.
These animals are here through no fault of their own. They are here because of irresponsible people that did not spay or neuter. They deserve better.
What a pity these poor angels don't have a powerful lobby to go to bat for them. There would be a state-of-the-art shelter in every county. But because they have no money and no power, all they have is us. Please help.
