Awards Presented During United Way Community Celebration

United Way of Kosciusko County employees, board members, volunteers and financial contributors gathered Friday morning to celebrate achievements accomplished in 2008.

The organization's annual community celebration luncheon was hosted by Baker Youth Club and was sponsored by Coldwell Banker, Roth, Wehrly, Graber. Penguin Point provided catering.

In 2008, individuals, corporate contributors and employee campaigns raised $1,786,122 for United Way of Kosciusko County. The goal was to raise $1.7 million.

The annual Volunteer Of The Year award was presented to Steve Corbett, DePuy, for his efforts as the campaign general manager.

Corbett has been involved with United Way for three years and served in other capacities of the previous campaign cabinet. He joined the United Way Board of Directors in 2008.

Tabitha Cooper, Paragon Medical, received the Key Leader Of The Year Award.

Key leaders are volunteers who organize the internal campaigns at each individual company. During Cooper's service as Key Leader, Paragon's campaign participation grew from 17 percent to 64 percent.

The 2008 campaign cabinet members were introduced.[[In-content Ad]]Campaign Unit chairs were Stephen Deitsch, Zimmer Inc., industry; Greg Maxwell, Famers State Bank, commerce; Joan Darr, Kosciusko Community Hospital, professional; Randy Maxson, Ivy Tech Community College, community; and Chuck Niemier, leadership giving.

Additional cabinet members include Kurt Kamholz, Precision Medical; Siobhan Davenport, KCH; Al Grossnickle, Miller's Merry Manor; Kevin Marose, Hall & Marose Insurance; Doris Lemert, Kosciusko REMC; Steve Blair, Elder-Beerman; Ben Shively, Lake City Bank; Deb Blatz, Warsaw Community School Corp.; Warsaw Police Chief Perry Hunter; and Steve Foster.

Area businesses were recognized for their outstanding contributions to United Way. Honorable mention was given to companies who had an increase in the percentage of their employee campaigns and included Elder-Beerman, IBM, Little Crow Foods, Rinker Boat Co., Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. and Zimmer Inc.

There were a number of companies which ran internal employee campaigns and met their challenge for the year who were honored with employee achievement awards. Recipients included Bart's Water Sports, Biomet Inc., Cardinal Services, Danco Anodizing, DePuy Inc., Farmers State Bank, Grossnickle Eye Center Inc., Kosciusko REMC, Lake City Bank, Medtronic Spinals & Biologics, Miller's Merry Manor, Paragon Medical, Rohm & Haas Powder Chemicals LLC, RR Donnelley, and United Way of Kosciusko County.

Every year United Way supports individuals in the community through donations to local services, individual assistance and overall community support.

This year, the board will review the focus for the community. The three major areas of impact will be education, income and health. The specific descriptions and details of the target areas is anticipated to be announced in early March.

Board members elected to serve their second term were Jim Tinkey, MutualBank; Lora Beeson, KCH; Ron Horgan, Warsaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church; and Mike Scott, Zimmer Inc. One new member was elected to the United Way Board, Dr. Thomas Edington, Wawasee School Corp.

Bob Vitoux, Biomet Inc., vice president of finance, will serve as United Way's 2009 campaign chairman.
