Lowe, co-coordinator of grassroots environmental group Renewal, spoke to about a dozen Grace students as part of Renewal's seven-week, 15-state "Green Awakening Tour."[[In-content Ad]]Through the tour, which coincides with the launch of Lowe's book, Renewal hopes to spread the word about the "growing creation care movement" on college campuses across North America.
The tour is now in its Midwest leg, which has included stops at Christian colleges and universities like Moody Bible Institute and Taylor University.
This weekend, Goshen College will host a regional leadership retreat where Renewal will, according to the group's Web site, equip college students to become environmental leaders in their communities.
Lowe said that many world crises, including world hunger, disease and natural disasters, are related to the environment.
"All the big issues in the world that I want to help with - I need to know a little about the environment," said Lowe during his lecture.
Grace sophomore Drew Rochotte, president of Fostering Eden, the college's student ecology club, invited Lowe to Grace's campus.
For a college student, the first step to caring for the environment is just to be aware of the issues, said Rochotte. Many college students seldom stop to consider their impact on the environment, she said.
"I'm new at this, too," he said.
Last year, Fostering Eden proposed campus-wide placement of recycling bins at Grace, an initiative that was implemented with help from the college's student senate.
That's the kind of action Lowe wants to promote.
"We need to move from discussing to doing," he said.
