PLYMOUTH -ÊWhen the draws for the Plymouth Sectional were made, the two boys basketball teams with the least impressive records (Culver Military Academy at 9-11 and Whitko at 4-16) were pitted against each other in the bye game Friday night, with the winner advancing to the sectional championship.

When the time actually came to play the game, CMA, fueled by 24 Jackson Atoyebi points, defeated Whitko 68-56 to advance to tonight's championship game against Tippecanoe Valley.

Atoyebi jump-started the game for CMA as he scored the first six points of the first quarter.

However, Whitko fought back from a 6-0 deficit to tie the score after Ben Ryan and Adam Wendel combined for six straight points for the Wildcats.

CMA outscored Whitko 9-6 in the last 2:56 of the first frame to take a 15-12 lead into the second frame.

"We got off to a slow start, down 6-0," said Whitko coach Steve Pickett. "That was hard for us mentally. It put us in a situation where we were digging from behind, kind of like we did all year."

The CMA squad held Whitko to just 3-of-9 shooting in the second quarter, and at the half, the Eagles held a seven point lead, 28-21.

CMA's Cole Herr hit a three-pointer to start the third quarter, but Whitko answered quickly. Alex Frantz netted a rebound basket to reduce the lead to eight. Brent Goble stole the ball on the CMA inbounds pass and dished it off to Wendel for another basket to cut the Eagle lead to six, 31-25.

However, the Wildcat run stopped there. The teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter, and at the end of three, the score was 46-37 in CMA's favor.

CMA outscored Whitko 22-19 in the final quarter of play to finish the game with a 68-56 win.

"Whitko did a good job," said CMA coach C.J. Kersey. "Everytime we started to make a run, they fought back. This was one of the better efforts of the teams we have faced this year."

Brandon Waller led the Wildcats with 12 points, while Ben Ryan added 10 points in the Wildcat effort.

Atoyebi led all scorers with 24 points, and Herr added 16 points. Kevin Fraction chipped in 10 for the Eagles.

"I though Herr really hurt us in the second half," said Pickett. "When you play a team with a big guy like Atoyebi, its easy to lose track of where Herr is. He hit two or three big threes in the second half."

Whitko finishes the season 4-17. CMA, now 10-11, will face Tippecanoe Valley in tonight's 7:30 p.m. championship game.
