SYRACUSE — Wawasee High School Athletic Director Steve Wiktorowski is doubling down.
Coming to Wawasee in July of 2011 for the retiring Mary Hurley, Wiktorowski is now adding the title of head varsity boys basketball coach to his responsibilites.
Announced during a special school board meeting Tuesday evening, Wiktorowski will fill the position vacated by Phil Mishler, who resigned in June after going 168-126 in 13 seasons, which included a regional title in 2006, as well as sectional crowns in 2006 and 2010.
Mishler’s squad finished last season with a disappointing 5-16 record, but it’s sectional roster didn’t feature any seniors, just two juniors and the bulk of its talent was in the sophomore class.
Prior to coming to Wawasee, Wiktorowski led the Goshen College women’s basketball team to a 93-183 mark in nine seasons, which included a 26-9 season in 2003-04. That year, the Lady Maple Leafs won the now-renamed Mid-Central College Conference regular season title, as well as the MCC tournament championship, earning a berth in the NAIA Division II National Tournament.
And while he’s coached in the collegiate ranks, he cut his teeth with high school boys hoops, beginning at Fairfield High School.
A 1980 graduate of Indiana University, the John Glenn High School grad began his teaching career at Fairfield, where he also served in many coaching capacities before getting the varsity boys job in 1986.
Coaching the Falcons between the 1986-87 and 1992-93 seasons, Wiktorowski went 78-78.
After reaching the sectional title game in 1988, where his Falcons fell 68-65 to East Noble, Wiktorowski had his most successful season the following year, going 18-5.
Featured on that 1988-89 team were current Goshen girls basketball coach Lenny Krebbs, as well as current Goshen boys basketball coach Brian Bechtel, who is now a Northern Lakes Conference rival.
Leaving Fairfield after a 5-16 campaign in 1993, Wiktorowski then served as an assistant coach at Northridge for two years before getting the head boys gig at Prairie Heights High School in 1995.
At Prairie Heights, his record was 45-98, highlighted with a 12-10 mark in 1999-2000.
Posting five winning records in 14 seasons as a varsity boys head coach, while going 123-176, Wiktorowski moved on to Goshen College in 2002, where he coached the women until coming to Wawasee.[[In-content Ad]]
