Warsaw School Board will be looking for a new administrator now that the assistant superintendent has announced his retirement.

Dr. Anthony Etienne announced to the board Monday that his retirement will be effective July 4. The board accepted the notice with regret.

Etienne, who has been with Warsaw Community Schools since 1992, described himself as a "corn-lovin' country boy from the southern hills of Indiana," said superintendent Dr. Lee Harman. He has a total of 39 years experience in education, serving as a teacher, assistant principal and principal of junior high and high schools.

"We're going to miss Tony and I'm going to miss his wise counsel ... ," Harman said.

Board president Craig Allebach said, "Thanks for all your work and all you've done for Warsaw Community Schools."

The board also heard a report from Leesburg Elementary principal Lynn Simmers on the Shurley Method, a way of teaching fourth- and fifth-graders writing, spelling and grammar skills. Leesburg fourth-grade students demonstrated to the board how they can read a sentence and identify the individual parts, including subject, predicate, prepositional phrases, adjectives, etc.

In other business, the board:

• Approved the 2001-02 school calendar. The first day of school for students will be Aug. 21; Christmas break will be from Dec. 24 to Jan. 4; spring break will be the first week of April; high school graduation will be June 7; and the last day of school for students will be June 5.

• Heard a report from Harman that enrollment in all Warsaw schools is 6,252 students, down 32 from last year. Compared to last year, enrollments are level at Atwood, Jefferson, Leesburg, Silver Lake, Washington and Lakeview schools; up at Claypool, Lincoln and Edgewood; and down at Eisenhower, Harrison, Madison and Warsaw Community High School.

• Heard that the WCHS prom will be May 19 in the high school gym, and WCHS also will host a career fair April 26 from 7:30 to 11 a.m.

• Gave the administration permission to ask the state to approve six early release dates for staff and student development. Etienne said late arrivals also were used in the past, but because of fog and snow delays, early release dates are preferred.

School board members are Craig Allebach, Brad Brail, Larry Chamberlain, Cathy Folk, James Folk, Charles Sauders and Roy Szymanski. Superintendent is Dr. Lee Harman and assistant superintendent is Dr. Anthony Etienne. The board meets in the administration building at 7 p.m. on the third Monday of each month. [[In-content Ad]]
