Arvil Thomas 'Whitey' Slone

GUTHRIE, Okla. – Arvil Thomas “Whitey” Slone, 63, of Guthrie, Okla., and formerly of Warsaw, died March 10, 2013, at the V.A. Medical Center, Oklahoma City, after a courageous battle with cancer.  
He was born Aug. 11, 1949, in Prestonsburg, Ky., to Arvil and Mary Elizabeth Taylor Slone. In 1966, he married Patricia Jean Shepherd, who died Aug. 10, 2004.
He entered the U.S. Army in 1967, serving in the Vietnam War and was wounded in action. He received a Purple Heart plus various other medals and honors. Upon his return to the United States, he was commissioned to Kent State, Ohio, to secure the campus due to the shootings. He was discharged in 1970 as a corporal sargent. He worked for many years as a steel worker.
Surviving are a son, Joseph (and spouse Rose) Slone, San Marcos, Calif.; a daughter,  Angela (and spouse Rod)  Corle, Grimes, Iowa; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; three brothers, Ronald, Mark and Daniel; three sisters, Lydia Lichlyter, Sharon Kocerek and Justine Megething; and his special friend, Virginia Bounds. He also was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Community Funeral Home Chapel, Guthrie, Okla., with Pastor Bill Thorne officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park, Guthrie.
