PLYMOUTH - Arnold "Dick" Umbaugh, 84, of 625 Oakhill Ave., Plymouth, died at 12:36 a.m. Oct. 10, 2008, in Catherine Kasper Life Care Center, Donaldson.

He was born Oct. 2, 1924, in Argos, to Cecil and Esther Cool Umbaugh. On April 21, 1946, in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Donaldson, he married Berniece Samuelson, who survives.

He was a 1943 Argos School graduate. He entered Hanover College in June 1946, where he majored in chemistry and biology. He graduated from Hanover in June 1950, and attended one year of medical school at Indiana University.

In May 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country. He received basic training at Great Lakes, Ill., and served as pharmacist mate 1/class aboard the USS Granville Transport Ship in the South Pacific for 2-1/2 years.

Returning to Plymouth, he was a lab tech at Parkview Hospital. He later joined Investors Diversified Service and was a financial advisor for 28 years, retiring in 1985. He and Berniece moved to Saint Germain, Wis., for eight years, where he enjoyed fishing. They returned to Plymouth in 1993.

He was a Boy Scout in his youth, and as an adult the took on the roll of Scout leader. He also was very active in his church. He taught Sunday school and was on the church council many times. He was a member of Rotary Club and American Legion. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

Also surviving are three sons: Mark (and spouse Suzanne) Umbaugh, Argos; David (and spouse Vainca) Umbaugh, Pebble Beach, Calif.; and Dan (and spouse Barbara) Umbaugh, Carmel; a brother, Gerald Umbaugh, Kansas; a sister, Ercell (and spouse Morris) Zink, South Bend; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lois Weidner; and a granddaughter, Sarah Jane Umbaugh.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Donaldson, with the Rev. Dennis Wenzel officiating. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Donaldson.

Calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 W. Madison St., Plymouth, and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.
