Area Wrestlers Place At State

INDIANAPOLIS - At the state wrestling championship Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Warsaw's Tom Lowe (171 pounds) and Justin Brooks (103) each earned fifth-place awards, while Whitko's Brett King (103) finished seventh and Warsaw's Matt Elvidge (135) finished eighth.
Just getting there is satisfaction enough for any wrestler, but the championship is the ultimate goal. Fifteen qualifiers in each of the 14 weight classes must settle for something less.
The four local medalists all won their matches on Friday evening.
Lowe (171) tangled up Ft. Wayne Snider's Tanner Martin and gave him no second chances, scoring a fall in 1:28. Brooks and MaElvidge were hesitant at first, but as their matches continued they got stronger, both with high-scoring third periods to win and advance to Saturday.
King dominated out of the gate, winning 13-5 to advance, while teammates Ryan Poage (215) and Bryan Frush (275) were both eliminated with opening-round losses. Poage lost 5-2, while Frush was edged 3-1 in overtime.
On Saturday, the four area place winners all lost their first matches to be bumped to the consolation brackets.
Brooks lost in overtime to the eventual runner-up. Lowe also lost to the runner-up, while Elvidge was pinned by eventual state champion Matt Irwin of Bellmont. King was the victim of a fall in his first match Saturday.
Brooks and Lowe came back to win in round three. Lowe pulled out a 1-0 overtime win and Brooks defeated King 5-0, while Elvidge was edged 1-0.
Concluding matches ended with victories and fifth place for Brooks and Lowe.
In matches for seventh place, King won, while Elvidge lost.
"We're proud of all of them and we realize that it was a great accomplishment," said Warsaw coach Tony Boley. "Many kids don't make it here, and many kids make it here and don't get past Friday night. But we bring three kids and they earn medals. It's huge."
"We are already thinking about the future for Tiger wrestling," continued Boley, "So we are going to have some wrestling camps for elementary school, with some of our high school kids helping out. These will run for a couple of weeks in the evenings."
Boley pointed to Scott Hutcherson, who has been an assistant coach in the wrestling program.
Hutcherson seconded the feeling of pride for what was accomplished by the place winners, but noted, "They were a little nervous and uptight, but they all worked out of it. They had a great experience just to be down here and see how this is because you can't compare it to any other championship."
Hutcherson explained that three Tigers winning medals "is a big step for Warsaw, and there were a lot of Warsaw kids and their parents here as spectators. This success is making them hungry to experience the same thing. We're hearing about a lot of kids wanting to be part of Warsaw wrestling because of what has happened this season. It will help build the program. Tony [Boley] and I have talked about the plans for an elementary program, and Warsaw wrestling is going in the right direction."
