In an effort to further solidify Northern Indiana's relationship with the effort to bring the 2016 Olympic Games to Chicago, the seven convention and visitors bureau members of the Northern Indiana Tourism Development Commission announced they will form a regional 2016 Olympic committee.

The committee, headed by LaPorte County Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Jack Arnett and South Bend/Mishawaka CVB Executive Director Lynn Kachmarik, will serve as a conduit between the Chicago 2016 committee and Northern Indiana lodging, dining and retail partners.

As part of its push to secure the games, the Chicago 2016 Committee reached out to thousands of hotel and lodging partners throughout the Chicagoland area to secure some 60,000 hotel rooms to be used for what officials called the "Olympic family."

Olympic officials met with several NITDC members and partners in Michigan City last fall, where they received overwhelming support for the games.

The second phase of the Olympic push is expected soon, as the 2016 committee will work again with local communities in an effort to put together a package showing the International Olympic Committee that local communities are in support of the games coming to Chicago.

NITDC members along the Indiana Toll Road corridor - which include LaPorte, Porter, Elkhart, Marshall, LaGrange and Kosciusko counties and South Bend/Mishawaka - met with Chicago 2016 officials late last fall. With the help of local lodging partners, they signed letters of understanding promising thousands of rooms to be blocked for Olympic officials and "family."

Chicago 2016 officials said the International Olympic Committee requires at least 60,000 secured rooms to consider a city as a viable host.

"We are excited to play an active role in bringing the Olympics to Chicago. It's very important that we as a region play a prominent role in this process," Arnett said. "NITDC member counties are well suited to serve the games in Chicago with the South Shore Line, the Indiana Toll Road and I-94 all connecting the counties with downtown Chicago and the Olympic Village."

"In anticipation of Chicago getting the 2016 Olympic Games, the NITDC is preparing to be 'out in front' in terms of making sure the International Olympic Committee and the United States Olympic Committee and all its national governing bodies are fully aware of the many excellent athletic facilities that we have, not only leading up to the Olympic Games, but also while they are here preparing to compete," Kachmarik said. "We are very excited to reach out to the thousands of visitors and tourists that the Olympic Games will bring to our region and want them to be fully aware of all of the great attractions that our communities can offer them while they are visiting our country."
