The 89 points (89-64) that Tippecanoe Valley scored Friday against Northfield is believed to be the most scored by a Gregg Sciarra-coached Viking basketball team. Sciarra has been the Vikings' coach since 1991.
Valley's 89 points scored against Northfield are 24 more than the Vikings scored against any opponent this season. Valley's previous high, 65, came in a 66-65 loss to Rochester in the Plymouth Tournament.
As the season goes on, the Vikings are finding they have three go-to players offensively: shooting guard Eric Love and forwards JayDee Parker and Brandon Eaton. Love scored 39, Eaton 33 and Parker 32 in Valley's two games last weekend.
If Eric Prater continues to do what he did Saturday against Caston, the Vikings may have found a scorer off the bench. Prater, a reserve playing his second game after he returned from a knee injury, scored 10 against Caston. Monday's Caston/Valley game story incorrectly stated that was Prater's first game back; it wasn't. Prater played in Valley's 89-64 Friday win over Northfield.
Tippecanoe Valley no longer has the services of senior Scott Cooksey, who was declared academically inelibible.
Warsaw's loss to NorthWood marks several distinctions for the Tigers, most of the them on the negative side. It is the first time the Tigers have lost two consecutive games since the final regular season game of the 1994-95 season and the first game of the sectional. It is the first time a Tiger team has lost at least two games in the Northern Lakes Conference since 1992-93. Warsaw has won or shared the NLC title for four straight years with the only losses in the conference coming during that stretch to Plymouth last year and in 1995-96.
The loss to the NorthWood was the first for Warsaw wince 1988 and only the fourth loss to the Panthers since 1969.
Warsaw's four losses this season have come by a combined total of 13 points. Three of those losses have been by a total of six points.
In two games last weekend, Triton guard Matt Savill hit 8 of 14 three-pointers and scored 31 points. He's a fast starter: seven of the eight threes came in the first quarter of the two games.
Triton is 3-7. Of the 10 teams the Trojans have faced, seven have had winning records. Two of Triton's three wins came against teams with losing records.
Triton is 1-3 since Christmas, but the Trojans could very easily be 3-1. One loss came in overtime to John Glenn (55-53); another loss came on a buzzer-beating shot by Bethany Christian guard Marcos Garber (57-55).
After Manchester went 2-0 on the weekend, the Squires moved up to a spot to No. 2 (Class 2A) in the state, the highest ranking for them this year. They also received four first-place votes, which is the first time Manchester received any this year.
The Wawasee Warriors continue to play better of late. Although it is not showing up in the wins and losses, the Warriors lost by just six points to state-ranked Northridge behind Brody Stipp's 13 points and 11 rebounds. Over the Christmas break, Wawasee lost to Northridge 49-31.
Boys Player Of Week - Brandon Eaton, T. Valley
