In a high school boys basketball game that featured a pair of standout players, Davis' Fort Wayne South Side teammates came up big, as the host Archers beat the Warsaw Tigers 69-57 Friday evening at Don Reichart Gymnasium.[[In-content Ad]]Moore, Warsaw's ultra-talented 5-foot-9 point guard, led all scorers with 29 points, but the Archers won with a more balanced attack.
Junior Dustin Hall led the way for the Archers with 18 points, while Davis, a 6-5 sophomore who has verbally committed to play at Purdue University, scored 15 points and senior Greg Johnson chipped in with 11 points.
"Our inexperience showed up a little bit tonight," said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle, whose Tigers fell to 2-1 on the season. "We were not poised enough. South Side is a well-balanced team, and we just can't simulate their athleticism in practice."
The Archers lost by 34 points at Warsaw last season and struggled through a 3-19 season.
With former coach Gregg Taylor returning as head coach this season, the Archers looked like a different team Friday night.
A progam known for playing more of a street-ball style under coach Ryan Bond, Taylor has South Side playing team basketball. Against Warsaw, the Archers shot 53 percent from the field, made 9 of 19 three-pointers and converted 18 of 27 free throw attempts.
More importantly, outside of the fact that Moore scored 29 points, South Side was effective defensively.
"These kids have bought into what we're trying to do here defensively," said Taylor, whose team is now 4-1 on the season and playing with confidence. "We held Warsaw to 21 points in the first half, that's pretty good. The kids could have balked at the idea of what we're trying to do defensively and not wanted to play for a new coach, but they listen and they've attempted to do what we've asked of them. They're really buying into it."
Warsaw finished the game 19 of 48 (40 percent) from the field overall and 5 of 15 from three-point range. The Tigers converted 14 of 19 free throws.
"We had a hard time finishing plays in the basket area," said Ogle. "We had five or six shots in the lane at point blank range that we just didn't make. South Side is a good team. They're for sure a top 20 team in the state, I think, especially when they shoot like that. Give them credit."
Of the 19 shots the Tigers made from the field, nine were made by Moore.
Sophomores Lucas Grose (4 of 7) and Jordyn Coon (2 of 4) and seniors Justin Clemens (3 of 6) and Zack Linky (1 of 6) combined for the other 10 made field goals.
Clemens finshed the game with 10 points, while Grose added eight points and Coon chipped in with four points.
Linky and classmate Andy Conrad scored three points each.
Warsaw led 13-11 after one quarter of play but then trailed 26-21 at halftime.
Back-to-back old-fashioned three-point plays by Moore to start the third quarter gave Warsaw a one-point lead, but a 13-2 run by the Archers gave the home team a 39-29 lead with 1:58 to play in the quarter.
In taking a 44-35 lead into the fourth quarter, the Archers hit four deep three-pointers in the third quarter.
"We have the ability to do that," Taylor said of his team's long-range shooting. "I'm just glad we answered the bell."
The Archers were 6 of 10 from three-point range in the second half and led by as many as 16 points in the fourth quarter.
"They played well," Ogle said of the Archers. "They shot well. That's a good team. They made some deep shots."
Senior Steffen Jackson chipped in with eight points for the Archers, while classmates Isaac Fincher and B.J. Underwood scored six points each in the win.
"We had a lot of guys step up," said Taylor. "We had a lot of guys hit big shots."
The Tigers are in action again tonight when they host Huntington North, while South Side hosts Homestead Tuesday.
"We're not gonna dwell on this game," said Ogle, who was trying to pick up his 100th career win with the Tigers. "We've got two more games to get ready for our first championship game, which is when Wawasee comes to our place to open conference play."
