An unnamed individual donated $10,000 to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine told the county council Thursday.
He said along with the donation, the man wrote a heartfelt letter saying he felt compelled to give the money to the local sheriff's department because of the work of the emergency personnel in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. The person wants to remain anonymous.
Rovenstine asked the council to approve a special fund be set up for such donations, though the county sheriff's department is not actively seeking donations.
"I personally don't have a problem with that. I think it's a wonderful gesture someone in the county wants to do that," said council president Jim Tranter.
The council unanimously approved setting up a fund for donations.
Several transfers were also approved, including: maintenance department, $17,000; prenatal fund, $1,000; prosecutor, $300 and $5,385; clerk, a total of $7,364; Turkey Creek Township assessor, $550; sheriff, $10,000; 911, $500; county highway, a total of $4,250.
In other business, the council:
• Approved an inter-local agreement with the Kosciusko County Solid Waste District. The agreement allows county auditor Sue Ann Mitchell to serve as the controller for the district with reimbursement for services coming back to the county. In the first year, the county will receive a reimbursement of $5,000, and $6,000 every year thereafter.
• Approved meeting on the second Thursday of every month in 2002 instead of the first Thursday of every month.
• Approved the Cardinal Center retaining $2,500 for roof repair on the Alternative Learning Center building. For 2001, the county council approved $37,000 to the Cardinal Center for a roof project, but the project came in under cost and the Cardinal Center had $2,500 remaining.
• Approved the trustees' buggy plate ordinance addition for 2002.
Members of the county council are Tranter, Harold Jones, Tom Anglin, Larry Teghtmeyer, Maurice Beer and John Kinsey. Vice president Brad Tandy was not present at the meeting. Their next meeting is at 7 p.m. in the county courthouse Dec. 6. [[In-content Ad]]
