Animal Welfare League of Kosciusko County has announced a capital campaign to gather funds for a new facility.
“This community needs an updated and modern Animal Welfare League shelter. We have outgrown our existing capacity,” said Darla McCammon, executive director. “For the last five years we’ve seen steady progress at the shelter with innovation and great improvements in providing healthy pets for our community and in the astounding numbers of pets finding new homes. We were honored recently with the results of a nationwide study in which we were far above the national average in these accomplishments. But knowing what we have done, think about what would be possible with new and better facilities.”
McCammon also stated, “I look at this work we do as a mission field. We provide services for seniors, visit nursing homes, offer Kids Kamps in the summer, work with all our area schools, give internship opportunities to high school and college students, keep improving health for our community and our animals and so much more. We simply need more space and function in order to enlarge all these wonderful programs.”
She said the AWL helps improve the health of Kosciusko citizens.
“Having a pet helps mentally and emotionally as well as physically,” McCammon said. “Many studies have proven that just stroking a pet reduces blood pressure. Children in homes with pets develop fewer allergies on average.  Pets are calming. New studies even suggest pets can assist in early detection of some illnesses, not to mention the protection pets offer your home. It has also been said people in homes with pets have better resistance to illness. Another important aspect is in the exercise we receive because we own pets. Speaking of which, our donors should know we have plans to provide a very nice pet walk around the perimeter of our new facility and grounds.”
The AWL Board is excited about this effort. They have joined McCammon in plans to provide a place for residents and pets to enjoy. They view this as part of the overall service the AWL provides for the pets and people of our community.
According to a press release provided, “A new building will be appealing to visitors and will help entice new residents to live here. Costs of maintenance will drop substantially and they plan to add improved kennels with more cuddle rooms. AWL will be able to offer more programs for adults and children – even birthday parties for kids. Having more space will mean a bigger lab to continue the progress in having a healthy community of pets. AWL plans include offering greater expansion of already existing excellent services.”
It further states that the AWL’s dream of a new building is about to come true.  The AWL recently was awarded a challenge grant from an anonymous donor. Now the community needs to step up to the plate and help match these funds so everyone benefits, the press release states. The capital campaign has now kicked off and residents, businesses, donors and pet advocates are asked to assist in raising the funds for the new structure. Several architects have provided assistance in developing the final design.
The press release states it is easy for the community to help match the funds.  Donors are asked to donate at www.awlwarsaw.com; mail a donation to PO Box 1906 Warsaw, IN 46581; call 574-267-3008 with a credit card Tuesday through Saturdays between 11:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.; visit www.Youcaring.com and search for “Rescue our Shelter”; or drop a donation off in person (and see the architectural rendering) at 3489 E. CR 100S, Pierceton.[[In-content Ad]]
