ANGOLA - Steve Neff sees a silver lining in NorthWood's 57-47 girls basketball loss to Angola on Thursday.

"I don't mind going into the tournament having lost to a couple teams in our sectional," he said. "We'll have a little bit of motivation heading into it."

While the Angola Hornets (12-3) had heart, Class 3A No. 4 NorthWood (12-3) lacked it, the coaches say.

"We didn'tcome out to play, they did. We just came out in the second half flat," Neff said.

"We helped them out tonight. They played aggressive. They came out with intensity. They wanted the game more than we did. In most aspects of the game they were better than us."

The Angola defense forced 16 turnovers and found the Panthers struggling in almost every area of play.

The Hornets defense also shut down the Panthers inside game and outside game.

"We didn't shoot well tonight. We only scored 17 points in the second half and most of those came from two players. We had some good looks but we couldn'tbuy a baseline shot," Neff said.

The Panthers connected on just 17 of 50 shots and 8 of 17 at the line.

The only player that was able to find the bucket was Carol Duncan, who had 23 points on 9 of 16 field from the field and 5 of 9 at the line. She also added 13 rebounds.

Yet, she worked to get many of her points outside the paint.

"You aren't going to be able to stop her totally. But we can get a lot of help in there and limit her touches. We did a pretty good job of that," Angola coach Doug Curtis said.

Duncan was working so hard to get offense for the Panthers she didn't even realize her hot streak.

"I was double- and triple-teamed and I had to work hard to get my drives open and get some inside shots," Duncan said. "They left us open on the outside, and we just couldnt hit."

After jumping out to an 11-2 lead in the first quarter, the Panthers came back to build an eight-point lead at 30-22 with 2:32 to play in the half.

The Hornets then went on a 9-0 run to end the half at 31-30 and give them the lead for good.

After Angola stretched the lead out with a flurry of three-pointers, NorthWood pulled within 40-36 when Duncan connected on a free throw at 3:34 of the third quarter.

The Hornets then answered with another 7-2 run over the next five minutes to build a 47-38 lead with 6:34 to play in the game.
