Anders, Gephart Carry Triton To Title
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
PLYMOUTH - The two burly boys with facial hair, both sporting sleeveless Triton wrestling T-shirts, doused Curt Kreft with a Gatorade shower.
The routine is far from original, but then again, how often is a coach clad in a blue dress shirt with a yellow tie and gray dress slacks doused on a humid night as mosquitoes swarm above his head? This wasn't a football coach wearing a sweat shirt.
Kreft seemed oblivious to being soaked in business attire with bugs dive-bombing at him. What he was not oblivious to was fretting over premature celebrations.
"You don't even know if we won yet," said Kreft, Triton's sixth-year boys track and field coach.
Moments later assistant coach Jason Hunter lined up Triton's track and field athletes for a sectional champion picture and beckoned Kreft to join in.
"We're not even sure if we've won yet," Kreft said.
You couldn't blame Kreft for being paranoid. The official team scores at Thursday's Plymouth Sectional had yet to be tallied and announced. Triton won the meet only unofficially.
Kreft wanted to cross all the t's and dot all the i's as the Trojans never had won a boys track and field sectional title.
No grievous errors were made in the scoring. Kreft and his athletes could celebrate the school's first boys track and field sectional title. Triton won the Plymouth Sectional with 125.50 points, easily outdistancing Culver Military Academy (108.50) and Plymouth (106).
"I told our kids before the season we have enough talent to be very good," Kreft said. "I was worried about our depth. Here at a meet like this, I thought talent would win out over depth."
Triton's talent starts with sophomore Matthew Anders. Anders won the 100-meter dash (11.49 seconds), 200 (22.88 seconds), 400 (50.47 seconds) and tied for third in the high jump (6 feet). By himself, Anders tallied 35.5 points, outscoring three teams -ÊCulver Community (18), Caston (16) and Oregon-Davis (seven) - at the 11-team sectional.
Anders did what he has done all year - lead Triton in points.
"No one on our team has ever been close to him, but Nate Gephart's been coming on," Kreft said. "Matt holds the school record in the 400 (49.7 seconds) and 200 (22.5 seconds). He went to state last year in the 400 and was 17th."
Then you add in the sectional performance by Gephart, a junior. Gephart won the 3200 run (10:01.30), took second in the 1600 (4:38.15) and was a member of Triton's fourth-place 3200 relay team (8:38.70). Gephart helped score 23 points for Triton.
Combined, Anders and Gephart scored 58.5 points, more than seven sectional teams, including Rochester (53), Tippecanoe Valley (43), Whitko (40), Manchester (37), Culver Community, Caston and Oregon-Davis. The 58.5 points would have placed them right behind fourth-place Northfield, which scored 66.
Kreft could have spent much of his time talking about their performances, but he didn't. As happy as he was with them, he expected them to do well.
What he did not expect were the performances he received in the hurdles.
Triton's Seth Bowers and Brent Hammond placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 110 hurdles. Hammond placed fourth and Bowers ninth in the 300 hurdles.
"I think our hurdlers really stepped up," Kreft said. "We were [seeded] fifth and eighth in the 110 and finished third and fourth. We were [seeded] 10th and 14th in the 300 and placed fourth and ninth. Those events helped us out immediately.
"I figured we had six or seven kids who would score very high, and they did. But I still think our hurdlers are why our team did so well. They had their best performances of the year."
Other top performers for Triton included Aaron Trieschman, who won the discus with a throw of 142 feet, 2 inches; Jim Read, who placed second with a high jump of 6-1; Matthew Yankovich, second in the pole vault with a height of 13 feet; and Christopher Kauffman, second to Gephart in the 3200 with a time of 10:21.75.
Triton's team advances to next week's Kokomo Regional, as do all top four individuals or relay teams in each event.
Other top performances by local teams included Whitko, which jumped from second to first after Culver Military Academy was disqualified in the 400 relay. The Wildcats' team of Burl Haywood, Adam Hall, Brent Goble and Brandon Waterson won with a time of 44.97 seconds.
Tippecanoe Valley's 1600 relay team of Greg Prater, Ross Stutzman, Brandon McCombs and Casey Wise placed second with a time of 3:32.95. Manchester's David Bazzoni, one of the top pole vaulters in the state, won that event with a height of 14-6. Teammate Nate Kerr took second in the 400 with a time of 51.67 seconds.
Other schools had highlights here or there, but the night belonged to Triton. Triton, which entered with a 6-2 record, lost to Culver Military Academy during the regular season; at the sectional, Culver Military Academy took a big hit when it went from first place to disqualified in the 400 relay.
Triton's fifth-place finish at last year's sectional was in the middle of the pack. The first-place finish now gives the Trojans a sectional title in at least one sport each season for the 2000-2001 school year: boys cross country and volleyball in the fall, boys and girls basketball in the winter and now boys track and field this spring.
"I thought it would be real close with us, CMA and Plymouth," Kreft said. "I didn't think Plymouth would be as hard to beat as CMA. I had CMA winning by two points when I scored the sectional out beforehand. Then again, for Plymouth, it was a home meet, and they always do well here."
Not well enough on this night. During the team photo, the one Kreft worried about taking prematurely, a Triton athlete yelled "state champs."
If the Trojans go to the state finals, count on Anders to lead the way.
