Thank you for using writers like Clifford May and his recent article about the Middle East to stretch our minds and challenge our souls. It made me ask again: "What is America all about?"

And, "Is there any way we can get the rest of the world to see what we really are like?"

According to Cliff, the prevailing Mideast opinion is that we in America hate and mistrust the Arab world, and that we staged the murderous 9/11 thing to have an excuse to attack them - for their oil.

The first time I heard someone voice such an absurd idea, I found it hard to believe any sane person could be so ridiculous. "Oh well, ignorance is bliss, and a few people choose bliss in place of reality." It's still hard to believe that anyone could be that evil and negative as to think that way - unless they are brainwashed and fed such poison thoughts from childhood. And, what "normal" adult would ever feed the mind of a child such poison garbage? And why?

As Cliff recounts: We intervened in Bosnia and Kosovo a few years ago to keep hostile, "Christian" neighbors from slaughtering Muslim neighbors. It cost Americans lots of money and blood. But Americans couldn't be who we are and not think it was worth it.

Reminder: Americans could not stand by while Iraq, who had gobs of oil, invaded little Kuwait to get even more.

(And we have not taken a drop of their oil without paying a full, and big price for it.)

For many years the rest of the world waited, with guilty consciences, while the Jews, or people Israel, were shuffled from place to place and never given a small piece of real estate to call their own. Finally, the big nations got together and worked out what seemed a reasonable little deal in 1948. But not quite everyone were happy about it. So, what's new? It was undeveloped and little. But ... ?

Really, we Americans are a people with great ideas and big hearts. As Cliff May wrote: Yes, it all comes back to Israel: Supporting the ideas of a secure Jewish state happily living next door to a small, independent Palestinian state, is just not fair. (We need the excitement of "extremists" with hate and jealousy, and ?)

Little souls don't dream big dreams and think great thoughts. But whoever said we Americans are "little souls?"

How about, "Getting our act together" and remembering who we Americans really were, and can be again! Maybe we could have a good or great idea worth "exporting" again?!
