All-Stars Invade Syracuse
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
SYRACUSE - The song that rang through the public address system at Wawasee High School the past four years, Shanna Zolman certainly went out in a "Blaze of Glory."
Playing in front of a near sell-out crowd, Zolman, the 2002 Miss Basketball and state's all-time leading scorer for girls, was introduced to a standing ovation Wednesday night and then led the Indiana All-Stars to an 84-80 win over the Junior All-Stars on her home court.
Wearing the same green arm-band she's worn since elementary school, the University of Tennessee-bound Zolman led all scorers with 27 points, as she played 37 of the game's 40 minutes.
"This was really exciting," Zolman said of the all-star game being played on her home court. "To come back to Wawasee and play with all of these great players was special, especially wearing the No. 1 jersey this time instead of the No. 24. This was exhilirating, the standing ovation and all. I got chills up and down my spine."
The No. 1 jersey is reserved for Mr. Basketball and Miss Basketball, and the throng of Wawasee fans let Zolman know they were happy to have her home again.
While the game serves as a warm up for the Indiana All-Stars, a team made up of the state's best senior players, for Saturday's second game against rival Kentucky, the seniors had their hands full with the junior all-stars.
Led by Beech Grove's Katie Gearlds, considered a leading candidate for Miss Basketball 2003, the juniors led 47-35 at halftime.
A three-pointer and then a pair of free throws by Zolman at the 15:26 mark of the second half cut the junior all-stars lead to 51-49. Former NorthWood star Carol Duncan, headed to play at Purdue in the fall, then scored five consecutive points to give the seniors a 54-51 lead with just over 14 minutes to play.
Given the amount of talent on the junior all-star team, Zolman said she wasn't surprised the seniors had to work for the win.
"We weren't really surprised," Zolman said. "We knew of the talent they had, they're better than Kentucky is. They're definitely getting us prepared for Kentucky on Saturday. We needed to work on blocking out and rebounding. We expected a rough game, we knew it wasn't gonna be a blowout."
A three-pointer by Gearlds with 1:47 left cut the seniors' lead to 77-75, but consecutive baskets by Zolman and Duncan gave the seniors an 81-75 lead with 30 seconds left.
Zolman iced the game with a pair of free throws with 11.7 seconds left, giving her team an 84-78 lead.
To go with Zolman's game-high 27 points, Duncan scored 15, while Ohio State-bound Candace Dark of Fountain Central scored seven.
Gearlds led the juniors with 17 points, while South Bend Riley's Crystal Norman added 13 and 6-foot-6 Terre Haute South star Recina Russell added 11 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocked shots.
In the boys game it was much the same story, the Indiana All-Stars had to fend off the feisty juniors before claiming an 82-75 win. Clearly, neither game was a case of the Harlem Globetrotters vs. the Washington Generals.
After trailing just 47-44 at halftime, Indianapolis Pike star Justin Cage gave the junior boys a 72-71 lead with field goal at the 3:28 mark of the second half. The Indiana All-Stars then got a free throw from Penn State-bound Austin Cameron of Gary West and a basket and charity toss from Dedrick Finn, a Castle graduate headed to Xavier. Finn added a pair of free throws with 29 seconds remaining to give the seniors a 79-72 lead, a deficit the juniors couldn't overcome.
Though he didn't start, Mr. Basketball and North Carolina-bound Sean May of Bloomington North led the seniors with 13 points. Seth Colclasure, a Valparaiso-bound guard from Bellmont, added 11, while Gary West's Chris Hunter (Michigan) and Finn chipped in with 10 each.
Stovall led the juniors with 15 points, while DeKalb's Adam Liddell added 14 and Indianapolis Pike's Parnell Smith 11. Tippecanoe Valley's Trey Eaton played for the juniors, scoring his only points on a three-pointer to give his team a 22-20 lead early.
The junior all-stars stayed in the game despite the Indiana All-Stars' lineup including five players at 6-7 or taller.
Liddell was the juniors' tallest player at 6-7.
Both the boys and girls Indiana All-Stars will be in action Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse against their Kentucky Counterparts. The girls game is slated for 5 p.m. and the boys game 7 p.m.

City Of Lakes Triathlon Expected To Be Biggest To Date
By Dale Hubler, Times-Union Sports Writer
WINONA LAKE -Ê Just as he did at this time last year, race director Phil Eherenman expects this year's Optimist City Of Lakes Tritathalon to be the biggest yet.
As of Tuesday, approximately 400 applicant's, about 100 more than this time last year, had filed entry for Saturday's ninth annual event.
"I think the reason it's continued to grow is partly because when I first tried to organize this I tried to organize it from the perspective of the triathlete," said Eherenman, who has competed in 130-plus triathalons himself. "It was organized based on the race, food and prizes. I think the race has grown because people like the race, and they go back and tell others about it."
On the morning of this interview, Eherenman noted he did receive a call from an interested participant in Omaha, Neb. Eherenman estimates 10-14 different states will be represented.
The event, comprised of a quarter-mile swim in Winona Lake, a 13.3-mile bike ride to Pierceton and back, and a three-mile run in Winona Lake begins Saturday at 8 a.m.
Registration for the USAT-sanctioned race will take place Friday evening at 6 p.m. at Winona Lake Park.
The race will be broken down into male and female categories and then into age groups based on five-year increments.
Men over 200 pounds will be placed in a divison called Clydesdales, while women over 145 pounds will be placed in a divison called Athenas.
The event also has openings for relay teams, which can be comprised of men and women.
To go with its USAT-sanctioning, the event is also part of the Hoosier Series, a trio of select races in Indiana.
A pre-race clinic will be held by Scott Erba at Winona Lake Park Friday at 7 p.m. Erba, Winona Lake, won the overall title last year in a time of 57:07. Kalamazoo's Megan Smothergrill won the women's title a year ago in a time of 1:03.51.
The first place overall male and female finisher will receive a $50 gift certificate from a sports store to be announced, among other gifts. The first place male and female finisher in each age group will receive a $30 gift certificate from a sports store to be announced.
Among major sponsors of the event are the Optimist, Sun Rims and Warsaw Cut Glass. [[In-content Ad]]
