SYRACUSE — Lightning an hour prior to the scheduled kickoff at Wawasee High School, led to players not even working up a sweat, at least on the field, Friday night.
After a lot of waiting to see if a second storm front would pass in a timely manner, it was eventually determined that the Northern Lakes Conference game between Wawasee and Northridge would be pushed to today at 4:30 p.m.
“I’d rather have it like this, than be a quarter in,” Wawasee coach Josh Ekovich said in a phone interview, regarding the game never even getting started. “I think it’s better like this.”
Rain didn’t appear until 8:30 p.m., but with a storm front on its way, officials only let the Northridge and Wawasee players take the field for a quick stretch at around 7 p.m., before being ushered back to the locker rooms.
Fans were also not permitted inside the venue, but stayed in line until rain sent them running for cars and the game was eventually postponed at 8:45 p.m.
“With the lightning still coming down, we wouldn’t even be on the field right now (at 9:20 p.m.),” Ekovich said. “That’s what it just came down to.”
The fans did stand at the gates for nearly two hours, and Ekovich can only hope they return this afternoon.
“There were a lot of people that came out to support the teams and watch the boys play,” he said. “Hopefully the same amount of people come out (today).”
While Wawasee and Northridge didn’t even get started some others did, and a complete look at the postponed games and when they will resume is below.
• In Plymouth, the Warsaw/Plymouth game kicks off today at 2 p.m. with the host Rockies leading 7-3 with 6:17 remaining in first quarter.
• In Akron, the game between Tippecanoe Valley and Manchester never began and kicks off today at 10 a.m.
• In Bourbon, play was called with Culver leading Triton 14-0 with 2:21 remaining in the first half. The game picks back up today at 10 a.m.
• In South Whitley, the Whitko/Southwood game got farther than any other local contest, getting called with four minutes remaining in the third quarter. Play resumes today at 5 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
