PORTLAND, Texas – Alfred G. Loidl died June 11, 2011, in his residence. He was under hospice care for the last six months.
He was born in Fort Wayne to Joseph and Sidonie Loidl. In 1959, he married Mary Lou Frank, who survives.
He moved to Anderson in 1935, and was a 1939 graduate of Anderson High School, where he was named all-state two consecutive years. Upon graduation, he was recruited by Duke University where he was a member of the Rose Bowl team, the only Rose Bowl team not to play at Pasadena, due to World War II. He returned to Anderson where he farmed with his father. He and Mary  operated Loidl Ace Hardware, Winchester, from 1960-70. Having liquidated their business in 1970, he became manager of Maze Ace Hardware, Warsaw, from 1970-82. He moved to Texas where he opened an Ace Hardware Store for Lori and Betty Svadlenak. In 1984, he took a position with Tractor Supply Co., Corpus Christi, Texas, until retirement in 2002. He was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Portland.
Also surviving is a daughter, Jennifer, Chicago. He was preceded in death by a sister.
Services will be at a later date in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Portland. Burial will be in the IOOF, Frankton.
