He was born Oct. 3, 1922, in North Webster, to Avery "Pat" and Blanche Weimer Garber. On Sept. 14, 1947, in Warsaw, he married Vanetta "Peg" Rydquist, who survives.
A lifetime Warsaw resident, he retired from Times-Union in 1987, after eight years as sports editor and 33 years as editor. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Warsaw; American Legion Post 49, Warsaw; Rozella Ford Golf Course; and Stonehenge Bridge Club. He was affiliated with Baker Youth Club and Warsaw Little League, where he was presenter of the Avery "Pat" Garber Award. He was an avid Chicago White Sox and Warsaw sports fan. He attended Purdue University, where he was a member of the Purdue Glee Club. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, serving in World War II as a communication specialist from 1942-46.
Also surviving are a son, Jon (and spouse Jane) Garber, Claypool; three daughters: Lana Garber, Wabash; Janet Bilyew, Fort Wayne; and Sue (and spouse Mike) Sands, Roanoke; four grandchildren: Brock Bilyew, Brittany Dershem, Amber Feltner and Lance Sands; three great-grandchildren: Schulyer Walters and Taryn and Taylor Dershem; and a sister, Buthene Fuller. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Lance Bilyew, and a sister, Helen Fisher.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, Warsaw, with Pastor David Heim officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, with military graveside honors by members of American Legion 49 and Veterans of Foreign Wars 1126.
Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw.
