“Champions aren’t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them – a desire, a dream, a vision.” – Muhammad Ali
At Akron Elementary School, we believe that every student can be a champion inside and outside of the classroom. We believe students should develop life skills necessary to become physically fit, socially responsible and economically independent.
We offer our students many opportunities to practice being physically fit, socially responsible and economically independent through academic teams, clubs, programs and athletics. These opportunities are led by leaders in our school and community.
We have several opportunities where students in fourth and fifth grade can get involved and showcase their academic skills. Students can participate in Spell Bowl, Math Bowl and the National Spelling Bee competition. The academic teams give students a chance to be a part of a team that works together to solve problems, expands their vocabulary, and improves their spelling and math skills.
Students meet with their academic coaches, led by teachers, twice per week to study the skills they need for competition. After eight to 10 weeks of practice, the students are ready to showcase what they have learned at a host competition sight where they will compete against other schools.
School clubs are another opportunity where students, in grades kindergarten to fifth, can learn new skills or showcase talents they already have. Students can choose to participate in clubs such as Lego, tumbling, cooking, fitness, line dancing, sign language, art and many more. This year, Akron Elementary school is proud to offer more than 20 clubs that run for four to six weeks and are led by teachers, staff, parents and community members.
Boys and girls that are in the fifth grade also have an opportunity to get involved in sports. The girls are able to participate in volleyball during the fall and basketball in the winter. The boys can participate in basketball. These teams are coached by teachers in our corporation that work with their players on athletic skills and social skills that help them on and off of the court.
Junior Achievement is a program Akron offers to first-, second- and third-grade students to help them learn about money management and how business works. This national program develops students’ skills in the area of work – readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills. The program is taught by area business leaders and runs for five weeks.
At Akron Elementary, we are helping our students become “Champions” in life by offering them different opportunities where they can have a desire, a dream and vision to become whatever they want when they grow up.
