Don Ahrns, the last original Kosciusko County Area Planning Commissioner, attended his last meeting Wednesday.

Fellow commissioners honored him a plaque of appreciation and a copy of minutes from the APC's first meeting, 38 years ago. Jim Baker was the first president.

Ahrms is the school superintendents' appointee and they will meet next week to select Ahrns' replacement.

APC director Dan Richard said Ahrns has given exemplary service to the county attending the first planning commission organizational meeting in June 1968. At that time the group met on a weekly basis to develop the county's land use policies and zoning regulations.

"I'm proud to be a part of this commission," Ahrns said. "It's one of the best things about the county and is certainly an asset to the commissioners."

The APC makes preliminary recommendations for the county commissioners or appropriate town board to consider.

Ahrns moved to a retirement community in Goshen Sept. 1 from Syracuse.

APC members also include Vic Virgil Charles Haffner, Dick Kemper, Avis Gunter, Norm Lovell, Kevin McSherry, Larry Coplen and Charlene Knispel. [[In-content Ad]]
