NORTH WEBSTER – North Webster Tippecanoe Township Fire/EMS Education will sponsor classes for the New Advanced EMT.
The classes at 499 W. Washington St., North Webster will begin Sept. 8 and end April 27. Classes will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 10 p.m.
An Advanced Emergency Medical Technician, or AEMT, is a step between the EMT-Basic and the paramedic.
According to information provided by Sue Bechtold, AEMTs may function as part of a tiered response system. In all cases, AEMTs work alongside other EMS and health care professionals as a part of the emergency care team.
This course is designed to prepare attendees with more than an advanced understanding of emergency medicine compared to the Basic EMT. AEMTs are accountable for everything that an EMT-Basic performs along with more specialized life-saving skills. Although not trained to the level of a paramedic, AEMTs are able to provide more advanced care by using specialized training such as intravenous access, administration of emergency care medications and provide advanced cardiac procedures for patients needing such procedures as a part of their care.
Topics within the course will include patient assessment, body systems, trauma, oxygen administration, automatic defibrillation, manual defibrillation, ECG interpretation, IV therapy, pharmacology, primary care medicine, advanced assessment, management of shock and cardiac arrest, respiratory emergencies, endocrine emergencies, environmental and more.
The objective of the AEMT or AEMT program of study is The AEMT is designed to take students from basic to advanced life support skills. Advanced life support and patient assessment in the time of crisis are the main skills learned, the information states.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be eligible to test with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician to gain their AEMT certification.
In order to be eligible for the AEMT course, attendees must be 18 years or older with a high school diploma or GED. People must already be a current certified EMT in Indiana or NREMT.
