In Anthony Burchette's letter of Jan. 29, there are a number of incorrect statements. Due to the word limit, I will only respond to a few them.

In the letter he states that "no type of abortion is performed in this country after a fetus is viable, unless there is a medical reason." When the Supreme Court handed down the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 it stated that abortions could take place after viability for "health" reasons which was defined as "... any condition that might impact her physical, emotional, psychological or financial well being." All the woman has to claim is that she can't handle being a parent or she can't afford the child and she can have an abortion ... in some states even in the ninth month.

He states that "even if Obama did ban abortions, it still won't end. Just like murder and rape is illegal. It doesn't stop people from doing it." I realize that abortions won't end even if they are banned, but it will greatly reduce them. Many women have said that because they knew it was legal they thought it was OK to have the abortion. Today, they regret their decision and are dealing with emotional issues related to their abortions. Also, if we follow his line of reasoning we should make rape and murder legal because people are going to do it anyway.

He also states that "at least legalized abortion is safe." Actually, many women are injured, and some die, due to complications from a procedure that is supposedly "safe." Dr. Geoffrey Cly, a Fort Wayne obstetrician, found himself cleaning up medical problems after George Klopfer, the local abortionist. In testimony to the Judiciary Committee at the State House he said, "I come before you today to discuss dangerous situations affecting women of Indiana. Multiple serious complications have occurred and are still occurring weekly to women in Indiana who seek elective terminations. I recently became aware of the inferior medical care and medical negligence that has been occurring after two of my patients suffered serious, life-threatening complications from elective terminations performed in Fort Wayne ..." For Dr. Cly's complete testimony, go to www.kcrtl.org

Mr. Burchette indicates that prevention (contraception) will reduce abortions. This incorrect claim just helps Planned Parenthood continue to collect taxpayer dollars. Studies show that contraception doesn't decrease abortions. Experience has been reported from Scotland and Sweden where contraception has been heavily promoted and yet abortions have increased. Go to www.kcrtl.org for more information.

I realize that abortion may never be illegal, but that doesn't mean that pro-lifers should give up. We need to continue to help our society understand that abortion is not the answer to what often is perceived as a "problem" that needs to be "terminated." No matter what arguments the "pro-choice" side uses, or how they try to disguise it, they are still defending the killing of a human being ... a killing that will have negative consequences for both the child and the mother.
