AAUW Plans Garage Sale Fundraiser

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

American Association of University Women advocates for equity for girls and women in education and social issues, according to local chapter president June Stealy.

The national AAUW organization gives out scholarships, foundations and grant. Last year alone, Stealy said, AAUW gave more than $3 million in scholarships to women across the country.

Additionally, the Kosciusko County chapter of AAUW provides local scholarships. The chapter is planning a garage sale May 11-12 to help fund the scholarships.

AAUW locally has about 50 members, all who have associate’s degrees or higher, Stealy said.

The local scholarships are administered by the Kosciusko County Community Foundation. Scholarship applicants apply to that foundation, Stealy said, and recipients are selected in July.

Kosciusko’s AAUW offers a “traditional” and a “non-traditional” scholarship. The traditional is for local women who just graduated high school and are going to attend college at a local institution of higher learning. The non-traditional is for Kosciusko women who are 23 years or older and want to go or go back to college.

Last year 20 women applied for the two local scholarships. Two women were chosen, including Betty Taylor. Taylor received the non-traditional scholarship.

Taylor said she found out about the scholarship from Jeri Burke, the administrative director at Indiana Tech.

“We were discussing the different financing and she said there were different scholarships available. She mentioned this one and I applied. I was lucky enough to receive it,” Taylor said.

“I used the scholarship money for a laptop that I really needed for my engineering classes,” she continued.

She decided to go back to school after becoming a displaced worker.

Taylor had been working at Kimble Glass, but then it closed down. She did the “temp job” rounds, but knew she had to do something. She decided to go back to school and get her degree.

On May 19, the mother of two grown children will get associate’s degrees in industrial manufacturing engineering and management. She plans to keep going and get her bachelor’s degree, too.

“Once I started, you can’t stop me,” Taylor said.

Stealy said AAUW is promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education for women.

By getting her associate’s degree in management, too, Taylor said, “It opens up the doors a little more.”

AAUW has helped Taylor with her education, and she’s passing the word on.

“I’m encouraging my daughter and my future daughter-in-law to apply for the scholarship,” Taylor said.

Stealy said the garage sale fundraiser will be May 11-12 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. The sale will be at 210 Shaffer Drive, off Ranch Road, Warsaw.

“Donations are accepted if people want to contribute to the sale,” Stealy said. Monetary donations also will be accepted.

“All the money we make with the garage sale will go toward the scholarships,” Stealy said.

The scholarships go to local students studying at local institutions.

“The students are out there, they need help,” Stealy said.

For more information about the garage sale fundraiser, call Stealy at 574-269-7336.

Anyone interested in becoming a AAUW member can contact membership chair Mary Eherenman at 574-267-3992. The process just requires a couple of quick questions and payment of dues.

For new graduates, Stealy said AAUW has a new program that provides for one-year free membership.
