AAUW Holds April Brunch Meeting

American Association of University Women held their April 19 meeting at the home of Ruth Jones, Warsaw.
Brunch was provided by hostess Jones and co-hostesses Becky Lambert, Jill Beehler, Kay Farrar and Jane Wear.
Candy Townsend introduced the program speaker.  An interesting and informative program, “Direction of United Way, Evolving Community Needs and the Role of Vision Council,”" was presented by Pat Coy, executive director, United Way of Kosciusko County.  She spoke about the progress made and changes to the United Way and how it has impacted the county in a positive way.
President Lois Nichols read an email blog about life lessons from Alice Herz-Sommer, a holocaust survivor, and her biography, “A Century of Wisdom.”
At 109 she was the oldest known concert pianist.  She lived with a focus on the best in the human spirit. She concentrated on life’s gifts, rather than dwell on problems.  
Herz-Sommer said, “Gratitude is essential for happiness, and I have freedom to choose my attitude to life and find joy.”  
In the recent Academy of Awards, the winning film of the Best Short Documentary category, “The Lady in Number 6” is about Alice Herz-Sommer.
Nichols presided over the short business meeting.  Marsha Smith gave the treasurer's report. The secretary report was given by Marsha Cook. The slate of officers for the coming year was read and approved by the members.
June Stealy informed everyone about the upcoming garage sale May 2-3 with the proceeds going towards AAUW local college scholarships for young women in Kosciusko County.  The annual garage sale will be held at the Stealy residence, 210 Shaffer Drive, Warsaw.  Members are encouraged to support this fund raising event by providing items for sale, making a purchase, or giving a monetary donation.  Items need to be brought to the place of the sale before Thursday.
Names drawn for the Easter door prizes were Barb Johnson and Marsha Smith. Linda Scalet was welcomed as a guest and prospective member.
The final meeting of the 2013-2014 year will be a morning brunch at Bennigan's, May 17, at 9 a.m. The officers are in charge of the arrangements.  
Dues for the 2014-2015 year are being received at this time. Those not attending the brunch need to send their dues check with a friend/member or promptly mail them to director of finance, Marsha Smith, 19040 Elm R. Tippecanoe, IN 46570.
AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research, The Warsaw AAUW Branch gave $1,000 in local scholarships in 2013.
