85 Years Of Change

I grew up in the '20s and '30s during the Great Depression. The country was isolationist as the two oceans would protect us. The military build up of Japan and the rantings of Hitler were ignored.

This ended at Pear Harbor. Mr. Roosevelt rounded up all potential enemies, threw them in concentration camps and threw the key away - so much for Habeas Corpus.

Despite Roosevelt's repeated assurances that no American boys would fight on foreign soil, I soon found myself in England along side of British Empire troops all waiting on D-Day.

This war pulled the country out of the Depression, but cost about 50 million lives. Will history repeat?

The cavalier dismissal of the threat from "Radical Islam" is amazing. They have been at war with us for 30 years, attacking and killing hundreds of Americans around the globe. I don't see any candidates taking their clearly stated goals seriously. They were in the country before 9/11 and they are here now.

Russia and China increasing military expenditures 10 fold, and Russia planning on placing missiles in Venezuela needs to be reconned with.

I was in the Middle East recently and they take these threats seriously. I found the Muslims interesting. They do not borrow money nor drink alcohol - something for our country to consider.

The effect of the upcoming elections seems to be overrated; many things candidates talk about will take years or decades to accomplish.

We have a world economy, now in a contraction, which greatly limits a president's ability to control the massive government debt at all levels.

The overbuilding, overspending, overspeculating by individuals. People using their houses as ATM machines, and many expected bank failures. Medicare and Medicaid are expected to consume nearly 90 percent of government revenues.

Society Security seems to be another longterm problem.

We import 70 percent of our oil. It will be many years before we will be able to change our dependence on it. No substitute for it near term.

Most health care plans seem to be based on handing the bill to someone else. I think the someone else's are broke.

Can you raise taxes in a recession?

Economic theory says goods will be produced where they can be the cheapest - that's not in Cleveland or Detroit. Big money goes where it is best treated. Economic studies have not found any country that has been able to vote itself prosperity.

The 19th century was controlled by the British Empire. The 20th century, it was the U.S. Now that manufacturing has moved to the Pacific rim countries, they may well dominate the 21st century, along with the countries controlling the world's energy. These trends cannot be ignored.

In my 85th year of life, neither candidate will affect my statue. Whoever wins will find out he is captain of the Titanic with rough seas ahead. Everyone should wish him luck.
