WINONA LAKE - The 61-year-old Indiana American Water tower that sits behind Jefferson Elementary School and serves approximately 700 Winona Lake residents will receive a facelift in April.

The water tower, located at 1099 Kings Highway, was built in the 1940's and has excess paint that needs to be removed and repainted, according to Indiana American Water Operations Superintendent Chris Harrison.[[In-content Ad]]"This tank has served the community well over the last six decades, however the time has come to make an investment that will allow the tank to serve customers for many more decades to come," Harrison said.

The project, which Harrison said will take two months to complete, will involve taking the 150,000 gallon tank out of service and removing the interior and exterior paint coatings, making any needed repairs and then repainting the tank inside and out.

The blue tower will be painted white.

Harrison said the company will take precaution to ensure paint from the structure is safely removed, contained and disposed.

"Although the tank will be out of service for approximately eight weeks, customers really shouldn't see any significant service disruptions during the project other than an occasional minor fluctuation in water pressures," Harrison said.

Utility Service Co., Kirkwood. Miss., is the preferred contractor for the project, Harrison said.

The company manages the inspection, upgrades and restoration of water towers throughout American Water facilities, Harrison said.

Harrison said Indiana American Water employees planned to have the tower painted last fall, but poor weather prevented the project. He said the weather depends on when the project will begin in April.

"We'd like to get the paining done before our peak painting season hits this summer," Harrison said.

He said Indiana American Water looked at paint jobs on four local water towers last fall and determined the towers that needed to be repainted.

In addition to the water tower in Winona Lake, the company looked at water towers on Jefferson, Durbin and West Center Street.

He said there are preliminary plans to repaint the water tower on West Center Street this fall.
